Zac Posen on the Evolving Ideal Body Type: 'It Is Up to Fashion to Change This and Guide This'
Zac Posen has created countless stunning looks for Hollywood’s elite. From Naomi Campbell (who closed his show last year), to Katie Holmes (who brought him as her plus one to her new film’s premiere), he is never one to play it safe (remember this tech-savvy coded LED dress that Lupita Nyong’o wore?).
“I’ve always dressed women of all body types, of all races and all ages — and that is part of my success,” Posen, 35, tells PEOPLE at the New York premiere of the HBO documentary Everything Is Copy. “I don’t think many brands do this but it is essential for me.”

As a token designer in the fashion industry who has “dressed and celebrated women” since the start of his career, Posen couldn’t agree more with the Sports Illustrated cover model Ashley Graham, who just declared the term “plus–size” as outdated.

Posen reminds us that “the body type ideal has continuously changed over history.” Adding, “Ideals change. It is up to fashion, something I call ‘fashion-tainment’ to change this and guide this. There are great moves and strides that the media industry and the fashion industry could be taking (to include all body types).”
As a proponent for women of all shapes and sizes the designer explains, “The editorial message can change and evolve — and if you create that ‘it’ moment — that can change a whole culture.”
