All the Details on Malia and Sasha Obama's Naeem Khan Gowns for Their First State Dinner
Prom dress shopping is going to have a hard time living up to this. For their elegant appearance at their first state dinner, Malia and Sasha Obama took their seats among famous Canadians including the Prime Minister and his wife, Lorne Michaels, Ryan Reynolds (with wife Blake Lively, of course) and a (surprisingly silver fox-y) Mike Myers. And they weren’t wearing any old thing from the backs of their closets. Each girl wore a striking embroidered Naeem Khan gown, worth nearly $20,000 apiece.
It’s a lovely parallel to their equally stylish mother, who also wore an embellished Naeem Khan for her first state dinner in 2009. (Like many of Mrs. Obama’s dresses on official occasions, it had meaning specific to the event; Khan immigrated from India as a teen, and the White House was welcoming Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh.) She has also worn Naeem Khan in more casual settings, including during a visit to Brazil.
This time, the guiding principle seemed to be “princess moment,” as both girls selected super-romantic gowns from the designer’s recent collections. Malia, 17, chose a simple, sophisticated blush gown with a sweetheart neckline and allover crystal beading, which once retailed on Moda Operandi for $17,990. Sasha, 14, went for something a little bolder, deciding on a beaded lace and appliqué ballgown in shades of cranberry, turquoise, black and beige; it formerly sold for $19,990.

The girls have developed their style over their eight years in the White House, transitioning from cute kids’ clothes to on-trend, cool but low-key picks from American Apparel, Topshop and Modcloth. Of course, like any teen sisters, they share clothes (including this cute denim Alice + Olivia dress). And, of course, like their famously fit mom, they love a good sleeveless dress.
