Look of the Week: Uzo Aduba's 'Denim Smoky Eye' at The Maids Opening Night

We’re constantly updating our Last Night’s Look gallery with all the best red-carpet moments (gorgeous dresses! dazzling accessories! sky-high heels!). Now, let’s talk beauty. Each week, we’ll be highlighting one of the most gorgeous makeup and/or hair moments, along with details on how to recreate the look — straight from the makeup artist or hairstylist — in our feature, Look of the Week.

Monochromatic makeup ruled the Oscars red carpet, and it shows no signs of slowing down as we head into spring. Orange Is the New Black star Uzo Aduba recently stepped out for the opening night of her new show, The Maids, sporting a matchy-matchy makeup look. But what makes this statement look so stand-out? The actress proved blue eye shadow can easily be worn well past the ’90s — and can actually look chic. Her makeup artist, Maria Asadi, breaks down the look, below.

Even before seeing Aduba’s dress for the night’s festivities, Asadi already had a bold makeup plan in mind: blue eye shadow, inspired by “the mood of the day.”

“I wanted to do a ‘denim smoky eye’ on Uzo,” she tells PeopleStyle. “I felt that the use of color has been neglected in general in the beauty world, and after finishing work on all the shows at Fashion Week, I wanted to make sure Uzo [was] ahead of the game on makeup trends. Before I arrived, I already had in my mind a ‘denim smoky eye’, and she happened to be wearing a soft blue dress.”

The cool blue hue of the star’s Bibhu Mohapatra dress further sealed the deal for the beauty pro. “‎I love when makeup is in sync with the garments,” she says. “When makeup is in harmony with the clothing, it looks well thought-out and it’s very tasteful — the overall look feels harmonious.”

To get the look, Asadi first applied Colour Pop Swerve Liner in Black in the star’s water line and then smudged it out for a slightly smoky effect. The makeup pro then applied a matte blackberry shadow (Colour Pop Super Shock Shadow in Beverly Shadows) in Aduba’s sockets to create “depth and intensity.”

For the main event, Asadi applied a glittery blue shade (Colour Pop Super Shock Shadow in Rex) all over the star’s lids and underneath the eyes, but then “brought the shadow down quite lower” to finish the statement-making look.

As for the star’s lips, Asadi opted for a nude liquid lipstick (Colour Pop Ultra Satin Lip in Echo Park) with a touch of gloss on top to keep the eyes the focal point.

“I didn’t want to distract from the beauty of the eyes,” she tells PeopleStyle. “I wanted the makeup to feel expensive, so thinking about color choices and product placement is essential. I wanted the eyes to make the statement.”

And if you couldn’t tell by the actress’s series of smiley selfies from the night (see here, here and here), Aduba was enamored of the final effect, says Asadi. “Uzo loved the look,” the pro tells PeopleStyle. “Her last words were ‘I love it!'”

Pastel blue eyeshadow is making a HUGE comeback for Spring. All beauty products do this hence why unless they look weird in the palette I never throw eyeshadow away. I have a 4 shadow pastel purple Lancôme Palette that I purchased in 2008. See? I would have trashed it for nothing. The one product I always replace every 6-12 months is mascara. It won’t ever go out of style nor will the bacteria. But if a particular shadow suits you that isn’t a hit…who cares? Rock it if it looks good.
