NE-YO's Wife Was 9 Months Pregnant at Their Wedding: How She Made Her Dress Work

02/26/2016 at 12:55 PM ET

NE-YO‘s wife gave maternity wear a whole new meaning when she walked down the aisle at their wedding this weekend. Model Crystal Renay was happy to show off her nine months-pregnant bump, but finding the perfect look took preparation.

“When I went to my first fitting, I had actually just found the day before that I was pregnant, so from the beginning of the whole dress process, we knew that it would be a growing belly,” Renay — who is expecting her first child, a son, with the Grammy winner this month — told PEOPLE ahead of their fairytale nuptials last Saturday.

The bride ended up choosing a lace-sleeved, empire-waist ballgown with a flowing train by Jean-Ralph Thurin, accessorizing her look with Badgley Mischka heels, a jeweled tiara and a glittery French-tip manicure.

And to keep with their white-and-pewter color scheme, the groom donned a grey-and-black Alba Designs tux, Lanvin shirt and tie, cuff links and lapel pin from Jason of Beverly Hills and Ferragamo kicks. The happy couple accessorized their outfits with brand-new diamond-encrusted wedding bands by Michael Greene of Greene & Co.

And though there were no cold feet, the bride did have nerves for one very practical reason: “I’m nine months pregnant: I’m nervous about falling on my face!” Renay told PEOPLE the day before their wedding.

Added her groom: “I’m more concerned about her making it all the way down that aisle or if the water breaks or something.”

Despite the pre-ceremony jitters, their wedding went off without a hitch — and once the celebration ended, NE-YO swept his bride off her feet, carrying her across the threshold in an Instagram video posted earlier this week.

“We can’t wait to start our life together,” says the Grammy winner. “We’re looking forward to just being each others’ best friend.”

I still find it amazing that they find this okay- nine months pregnant and wearing a white dress! I would never embarrass myself like that because yes- anyone with any class or manners knows you hurry up and wed before you show OR wait until after the baby is born & then have a small intimate wedding with family.

That dress is NOT flattering. And WHITE?!?! Please, you are nine months pregnant and clearly not that innocent.

Agree with Sandy 100%. Yes, I know I’m old fashion.

White wasn’t intended to represent sexual purity – it was a fashion statement popularized by Queen Victoria, and it showed that the bride’s family could afford to send her off in an opulent, impractical gown that she could only wear once (because streets were dirty in those days – after your wedding your gown was going to be toast). As the fashion has stuck around, people started deciding it was about purity. That doesn’t really hold any water, though. Many brides wear white simply because they consider it traditional, not to advertise the status of their hymen.

If a bride chooses to wear white, or chooses to wear red or black or blue or whatever, it simply means she likes that color and wants to wear it on her wedding day. It’s hard to make generalizations because her choice means something to HER – not some global color symbolism.

Here’s a fun fact – many brides in Asian countries wear red on their wedding day, because in their culture red is considered the color of joy

While I think the dress looks absolutely ridiculous on a woman who is 9-months pregnant, I hope they have a happy marriage and life together.

Extremely tacky! 9 months pregnant in a white dress and a huge chest tattoo. YUCK

The white dress thing is outdated. If someone wants to wear a purple dress or an ivory dress that is their choice. Let’s be for real! Most people that get married have already had sex, so using that old logic almost no one should be wearing a white dress. I can tell you that almost ALL women where white or a variation there of. So just because her “lack” of purity shows because she is pregnant doesn’t mean she should have to wear RED!. So let’s go ahead and let go of this out dated tradition. I thinks she looks beautiful. But at that I wish this baby would just come out state lol.

Anyone who knows anything about wedding attire etiquette now days, knows that the color white as a concept of purity is a completely outdated rule. It’s perfectly acceptable to wear white now even say, if it’s your second marriage. So what if she’s pregnant. Of course she’s huge at 9 months and not a virgin. The style of dress may not be the most flattering for her pregnant body, but the color white is perfectly fine. Good luck to them.

Interesting time to get married. Usually people wonder how they’ll fit into their dress due to diet and exercise. This is quite different. She looks beautiful, but probably a bit more stressful for the bride, which she doesn’t need.
