Look of the Week: Natalie Portman's Unexpected Deep Red Lip
We’re constantly updating our Last Night’s Look gallery with all the best red-carpet moments (gorgeous dresses! dazzling accessories! sky-high heels!). Now, let’s talk beauty. Each week, we’ll be highlighting one of the most gorgeous makeup and/or hair moments, along with details on how to recreate the look — straight from the makeup artist or hairstylist — in our feature, Look of the Week.
Natalie Portman‘s red carpet beauty M.O. doesn’t typically involve a whole lot of color, but it seems the actress has been stepping out of her comfortable zone lately — and we’re definitely taking notice. While out promoting her latest film, Jane Got A Gun, in N.Y.C. on Wednesday, the star opted for one seriously gorgeous beauty look — a bold Bordeaux lip paired with mega lashes. And because we think this unexpected makeup moment deserves some extra attention, we reached out to celebrity makeup artist Pati Dubroff for Dior Beauty for all the details.
Dubroff says the inspiration for the bold beauty moment came from the subtle pops of color in the star’s gorgeous intricately embroidered short-sleeve Valentino gown.
“When I saw the dress I immediately thought a lip would be great,” Dubroff tells PeopleStyle. “Natalie doesn’t usually wear a strong lip on the red carpet, and I love the way she looks with a lip, so I was happy she agreed to my suggestion.”
So to create the focal point of the look, Dubroff applied the rich, deep Bordeaux shade (Dior Addict Lipstick in #983 Insoumise) to the star’s pout for a bold pop against her olive complexion.
“I wanted a shade that was deep but not goth, bright but still dark,” Dubroff tells PeopleStyle. “Natalie has surprisingly dark olive skin so she can handle a dark tone.”

Moving on to the eyes, Dubroff used the caramel and taupes shades found in the limited-edition Diorshow Colour & Contour Eyeshadow & Liner Duo #557 Twig (out this month!) to define, and then used the eyeliner pencil in the set to blend the warm hues into the crease and under the eye.
The makeup pro finished the look with a few swipes of classic black Dior Diorshow Mascara in #90 Pro Black to create a voluminous lash look on both the top and bottom lashes.
To really make the bottom lashes pop, Dubroff recommends using a smaller mascara wand to grab the tiniest of hairs.
“I use a teeny tiny mascara for the bottom lashes made by Surratt Beauty (like this one),” she shares. “It doesn’t leave a heavy coat of product, just more of a tint.”
As for the final look? Portman loved it, says Dubroff. “I think she was really happy!”
