Kate Hudson on Her 7-Inch Haircut: 'It'll Grow Back'

01/26/2016 at 12:33 PM ET

ICYMI, Kate Hudson revealed a brand new haircut at the Golden Globes this month — and she shared on Live! with Kelly and Michael Tuesday that she was totally game for for the 7-inch chop.

Hudson dished about her new do, telling the co-hosts, “I cut my hair! I was ready to cut my hair off. Why not? It’ll grow back. I actually think boys are worse than girls when it comes to haircuts. Except my brothers who all need haircuts and for some reason don’t get them. They just don’t know how to groom themselves.”

…Maybe she should give her brothers a lesson in grooming. (Or trick them into a live Snapchat haircut!)

Hudson posted a video on Instagram of her longtime hairstylist, David Babaii, giving her only a trim the day before the Golden Globes — but Babaii told PeopleStyle that on the night of the event, they decided to “just go for it.”

“I cut off all of her hair!” Babaii shared. “We cut off seven inches, I measured it. It’s a really modern, jagged, crazy kind of cut.” Babaii added that he and her colorist Cassondra Kaeding also “made her go blonder” for the event, bringing her back to “Kate Hudson circa 2005.”

And it appears the 36-year-old star has been having a lot of fun playing with her new look, as she styled it pin straight at the China premiere of Kung Fu Panda 3, and went for a wavier, tousled look on The Tonight Show.

if THAT is 7 inches, I hate to see how she measure other body parts?!?

As a Cosmetologist, I always love to hear when celebrities cut off a lengthy amount of hair. It’s healthy for your hair and for yourself. Some get so attached to their hair and it’s not a healthy state of mind to be that way. People will say “My hair just won’t grow”! Well, it won’t when it’s too damaged and what they don’t realize is that your hair ALWAYS grows, but it’s probably breaking off on the ends, mid-strand or even at the scalp because, of not being taken care of properly. Especially, when it is styled every day, a LOT of products used on it and just plain abused. Glamorous hair is an important feature for a celebrity, I understand that and it’s important for any of us who want to look good. If you want your hair to work for you, then respect it and take care of it! Trim the ends often, demineralize and deeply cleanse the product build up off of it and do deep conditioning treatments at least weekly or at least twice a month. It doesn’t take that long to do! Especially, those who like to change colors or need to for a certain role, make sure you know what your hair needs. You can NEVER get to much moisture, but you also may need protein treatments. If you diet constantly, take medications, stress, poor diet and bed habits will take the protein from your hair. If it’s flat, lifeless and just plain frustrating, you may need protein. But, you can overdo it with protein treatments. A simple tinsel test on a strand of hair will tell you what you need. Any stylist who was trained properly, knows what they are doing and CARES about healthy hair, THEY will know how to do this and show you how to do it. Not only being responsible and taking care of your hair is important, but a change, even a small one, is good for the person. Kate taking 7 inches off may be drastic to some, but I don’t think so. It looks healthy and beautiful and shows that she has pride in herself by taking care of her hair and that she likes it can handle change. Don’t get stuck in a rut and think that the longer the better. As we age, longer hair can drag you down, shorten the look of your neck unless, you have a REALLY long neck to begin with. Just like going a bit lighter will make you look younger. Healthy hair is happy hair and will cooperate with what you want from it. That doesn’t mean do nothing to it. Porosity is a good thing, just not too much. It gives you body and a tool to help achieve the style you want. All in moderation!
