Gabrielle Union's Style Motto: 'If I Can't Walk Out of the House Feeling Like Beyoncé, It's Not Worth It'
A true fan is committed to following their fave celeb’s fashion choices — the good, the bad and the deserving of one’s commentary on social media. Gabrielle Union should know — she posts plenty of #OOTDs on her Instagram and gets plenty of feedback to go with. “There has been times where I’ll be scrolling through the comments and I’m like that is actually a legit suggestion,” Union tells PeopleStyle. “But sometimes it’s kind of hard to imagine what the commenter’s ideas are!”
That’s why she’s signed on as a celebrity host for the Covet Fashion app through February. It enables her fans — or as she calls them, “friends I haven’t met yet” –to have the opportunity to give her immediate feedback on the app. “It actually enables your friends you haven’t met yet to sort of put them use and actually tell you, ‘I love this, but I didn’t love your hair … [or] if you were to put on a different shoe or maybe if the top was cropped’,” she explains.”I love that. This partnership it actually allows me to see peoples’ idea about what they’d like to see me in. It actually shows off their sense of style and gives me new ideas that I hadn’t thought of. Its actually really cool and super interactive which I love.”
Interested? Keep in mind that if you want your look to be a hit, you’ll want to speak to Union’s current sense of style. “Right now I’m in a space of being a sneaker head so I’m kind of obsessed with how to marry comfort to fashion and style,” she says. (Case in point? After posting an Instagram photo of herself wearing a Christian Siriano dress with heels, she then updated the look with a pair of sneakers.)

And though she does love Insta to check out what her friends are up to or the latest pop culture drama, Union says her most-used apps are ESPN (I’m a sports nut”), Words With Friends (“I have 20 games going at any given time”) and Trulia, the real estate app. “My husband [Dwyane Wade] is like, ‘We just moved in! We just built our dream home like can we enjoy it for a minute?’,” she says. “I’m like if we were to move to Aspen, look at this property!”
She and Wade both run a tight race for the most stylish in their relationship, though she’ll give him the slight edge (“I’d like to think I’m a close second though”). Union describes her style as “evolving, sometimes daily,” she says; “I like to just take risks. Sometimes the weather dictates fashion and my sense of style and sometimes it’s the city I’m in. A lot of times it’s just my mood!”
That mood is key to making sure whatever she wears is a hit. “I’m not going to force myself into an outfit that just doesn’t look right [even if it’s planned],” she says. “If my body is not cooperating that day I am not going to force it and then be uncomfortable and fidgeting all day and feeling insecure about something. If I can’t walk out of the house feeling like Beyoncé its not worth it. If I don’t feel like Beyoncé or Janet Jackson, it’s like, What are we doing here?”
