Jennifer Aniston: I Gave Myself a Tanning Intervention

06/10/2015 at 09:00 AM ET

For someone who’s constantly in the spotlight, having great skin (and equally amazing hair) is a must for Jennifer Aniston. Which is probably why she’s the brand ambassador for Aveeno and the co-owner her own haircare line, Living Proof. So when the actress spilled all of her beauty secrets (like how she maintains her fresh-faced glow, why she’s all about SPF these days and the reason she’s giving up on tanning) in a recent interview with PEOPLE, we took detailed notes. And yes, we’re sharing the wealth.

The 46-year-old star may have a glam squad (which included her BFF and longtime hairstylist Chris McMillan), to prep her for the red carpet, but when she’s not busy getting camera-ready, Aniston keeps her makeup routine simple.

“I’m less attached to [makeup] now,” she tells PEOPLE. “And Justin [Theroux] loves me without.”

But her fiancé also loves her date night beauty looks. “He likes it when I smoke up my eyes!”

With or without makeup, the Cake actress maintains her radiant complexion by staying hydrated throughout the day.

“I drink water endlessly. Like five [bottles] a day,” she says. “Now it’s just such habit. There are so many lazy water drinkers!”

But most importantly, Aniston has cut down on her time in the sun — and now is all about doubling up on sunscreen, especially from Aveeno.

“I gave myself a sun-tanning intervention a few years ago, where I was basically saying, ‘Let’s just quit while we’re ahead,'” she tells PEOPLE. “I was not great as a kid with sunscreen. That’s one of my big regrets. Now I use Aveeno Positively Radiant Daily Moisturizer SPF 15.”

Looking great and feeling good at her age (and at any age) is important to Aniston — and to society, she says.

“We’re going to feel good about ourselves if we see another woman who is 50 and rocking it,” she shares. “If society is telling you to sit it out after 40, you diminish yourself. Believe what you feel. If you feel crappy about yourself, it’s going to show.”

Which is why she’s excited about Aveeno’s newest campaign, Unscripted Beauty, which asks women to share unscripted moments they find most beautiful with others. For Aniston, that moment occurred while she filming her latest film, Cake, last year.

“When I was filming Cake, I didn’t wear any makeup,” she says. “I was taken aback by how nervous I got about walking outside and knowing that there was probably going to be a whole group of photographers.”

She adds: “But then I just let go and I didn’t care. And over the next five weeks of shooting that, I really loved it. I wasn’t attached [to makeup]. If anything, putting on makeup felt so weird.”

She seems so self absorbed.

Riveting.
Does she ever talk about anything interesting? Such a dull, shallow, self absorbed woman.

Jennifer does have a following and therefore all of this is very helpful. Personally I have always known about this and took care of it way before now. But saying all that she does seem self absorbed like whatevet said. She must have other interests rather than herself..right?

Do you read the article just to make rude, hateful comments about her? I personally enjoyed reading it.

To those complaining about the fact that she never talks about anything interesting, I couldn’t disagree more. THIS is the type of stuff I actually want celebrities to talk about. I don’t care what your thoughts are on education, politics, or any other “interesting” topics. Why? Becuse I have no idea who you really are, how you arrived at your beliefs, or how sincere you really are. Just shut up, put on a good show and look pretty.

Maybe she constantly talks about her body, makeup, and hair because that’s all these people interviewing ask about. If not that, they bring up drama from 11 years ago.

What I meant about her being self absorbed is it seems she only focuses about herself and how she looks. I get she is an actress but there is more to life than her looks. Maybe there is way more to her than this, but it is ALL she ever talks about.

Ok, I’m not sure what exactly a “lazy water drinker” is. It’s not being too lazy to leave your desk and go to the water cooler, it’s remembering to do it. If I only worked a few times during the year and had an assistant to hand me a water bottle whenever I turned around, I’d be a five-bottle-a-day water drinker, too.

I’m sorry, I have liked Jennifer Aniston, but sometimes she gets a little Gwyneth Paltrow-ish when it comes to being relatable to normal people.

Panic moon, that’s what I was thinking. She’s in a little bubble and out of touch with the real world – just like Gooop.

GMAFB………..this woman gives a whole new meaning to SHALLOW. No wonder Brad Pitt was so bored by this vanilla chick……hundreds of millions of dollars and this is what she focuses on; shilling drug store products, PLASTIC bottles in a society trying to save itself ……….me, me, me. Box office failure, she can’t get a decent offer for a leading lady role, and she won’t go away, so we will be subjected to her endless self promotion ……..as what? I have no idea………..a t.v. ensemble star who didn’t successfully transition to HW but I am giong to be in your face anyway cause my agent will put me out anywhere at any time as long as I refuse to admit my fifteen minutes were up an hour aga?
