The Truth Behind Uma Thurman's Fresh-Faced Look, Straight from Her Makeup Artist

02/11/2015 at 09:00 AM ET

Uma Thurman’s latest beauty moment has been getting a lot of buzz. The actress stepped out on the red carpet Monday with some noticeably different makeup than we’re used to seeing on her, and it sparked some plastic surgery speculation. So we got the scoop straight from her makeup artist, Troy Surratt.

“Frankly, I’m quite surprised by the conversation,” Surratt tells PEOPLE. “By now I would have thought that we were all open to and knowledgeable of the role that makeup plays in the world of fashion and particularly celebrity, as a medium for creative self expression. I think that women should feel open and free to experiment with different beauty looks — it’s only makeup, at the end of the day it all washes off.”

Surratt calls the look he created on Uma “effortless Parisienne chic,” focusing on her lips and complexion. (Note: No mascara was used at all!)

“I wanted to give Uma a statement lip balanced by a more feathered brow,” he shares. “Uma and I discussed creating a look that was more editorial with soft natural lashes. As a makeup artist I’ve grown a bit tired of all of the lash-y looks and fake eyelashes that we’ve been seeing on the red carpet for some time now.”

By going for bold lips, statement brows and barely-there eye makeup, “the face is sectioned into three equal parts lending a visual balance and allowing the mouth to be the star of the face,” Surratt adds.

Love the actress’s lip color? It’s a combination of two shades — Surratt Automatique Lip Crayon in M├ęgalomane mixed with a Surratt Lipslique in Pecadille.

As for her skin, Surratt made sure her complexion was flawless — and extra glowy.

“I prepped Uma’s skin by massaging with Creme de la Mer The Concentrate,” hey says. “I applied a glowing foundation using a Beauty Blender for a super natural look. When the makeup was finished we misted her face with Tatcha’s Luminous Dewy Skin Mist for added radiance.”

What do you think of Thurman’s bold lip, subtle eye look? Should more stars try it out? Share your thoughts below.

It’s about time that celebrities look “real”. I think she looks beautiful for her age. Hollywood is so against aging and it’s ridiculous.

Let’s see how she looks next week!

Is it just me, I can’t stand not wearing mascara! I mean if I have no make up on then yea but to put on your make up and leave that out is just wrong to me, it like the icing on the cake!?

She looks really bad. Whatever this makeup artist did aged her. It doesn’t look like she had surgery, just looks like a bad make up job.

She looks like a portrait – I think it’s lovely. However, who knows if it is actually a lighting issue but it seems that some blending around the hairline would have been a good idea?

I think the makeup artist created a beautiful look. Love the daring (it really is) no-mascara angle. Creates a very delicate, soft appearance. Less eye makeup is the way to go as you get older. The red lip color is perfect. Very pretty. Nice job.

You can really see her foundation; it is too dewy. Maybe just a touch of powder would have made it a flawless look. She needed some mascara. Maybe don’t do the eyeliner or fake lashes, but mascara would have looked a little more balanced.

Not trying to be mean but I really don’t like the way she looks. Something seems “off”.

Sorry, but the makeup artist should have stayed away from that shimmery eye shadow! It ages her and makes her look tired and like she has been crying. Not a good look!

I am not a big fan of fake lashes either, but she looked like she had a really bad cold…
