Emmys 2014: All the Scoop on Christina Hendricks and Melissa McCarthy's Marchesa Looks

08/25/2014 at 06:52 PM ET

If you’re a pro awards show watcher, you’ve already noticed that the Emmys red carpet has been all about the red gown — and Christina Hendricks is leading the pack. The Mad Men star selected a crimson satin one-shoulder Marchesa gown with crystal embroidery, and of course it put her famous curves on display.

“It had an Indian-inspired, sari feel to it, so we paired it with similar jewelry,” Hendricks said on the red carpet of her gold Neil Lane jewels. She finished the look with a metallic Lee Savage clutch and center-parted waves.

And the dress was love at first sight for the actress. “Christina and I had just returned from a trip to London before her first fitting at Marchesa,” her stylist Lawren Sample tells PEOPLE. “We were so inspired by the city’s traditions and elegance and we wanted to choose a dress that encapsulated that feeling of richness and glamour. This Marchesa dress complements Christina’s beauty and poise perfectly.”

Another fun fact: Hendricks first fell in love with the dress earlier this year and she almost wore it to Cannes, but decided to hold out for the Emmys.

Also in embellished Marchesa? Melissa McCarthy, who selected a custom black ballgown skirt, worn with a basic tee. “Pairing Melissa’s custom Marchesa ball skirt with a simple black tee is glamorous, modern and fun with a hint of rock ‘n roll … just like Melissa!” her stylist George Kotsiopoulos tells PEOPLE.

Christina Hendricks must be losing weight. I’ve also thought she was so pretty but her face looks so thin here. Love her!

Another miss for Melissa McCarthy. I remember a few months back designer Christian Siriano got some flak for saying she was difficult to work with and now here she is in yet another underwhelming custom gown. I know she’s working on designing a plus size line but I’m not sure what the results will be.

Ultimately, if she feels good with her choice then I suppose that’s all that matters.

LOL somebody forget to turn the wheels in the background to the back on Melissa’s photo.

Not everyone can be a size 6, but Melissa is GIGANTIC! For health reasons alone, she needs to lose at least 75 pounds for starters. She’s going to get diabetes, cancer, or heart disease.

WTH happened to Christina’s face? She lost a lot of weight, but only in her face, or maybe she had a face lipo going bad??

I don’t know what everyone (who is commenting) is smoking but maybe you should take another look!!! Christina is a MESS. Her hair looks like she got caught in a rain storm and the seem around her knees looks awful. The model has an extra piece of fabric in that area. Melissa looks beautiful. The dress is gorgeous. The waist detail makes her waist look tiny. And by the way…. not everyone is a size 6.

Too much fabric on Christina’s dress. I looks like she lost weight, after the final fitting. It’s just bulky.
