CFDA Awards 2014: Rihanna Wears Completely See-Through Dress, Pink Stole and ... That's Pretty Much It

06/02/2014 at 09:38 PM ET

When you’re collecting the Fashion Icon award from the Council of Fashion Designers of America at their annual awards gala, you can’t just show up wearing any old thing. And if you’re Rihannawhose stylist says she’s already worn “all of [the] fall/winter” designer collections by the end of May — you really need to turn it out. Of course it would have to be something custom, something a little risqué and unexpected and something that would ensure people would talk. Well, we think she achieved all of those goals and then some.

The superstar made her red carpet debut in a custom Adam Selman design, consisting of a “fishnet dress, gloves and headscarf … hand-embellished with over 216,000 Swarovski crystals,” according to the press release. Understandably, she kept jewelry understated (for her) adding Paul Morrelli diamond drop earrings and a cocktail ring, plus one by Jacob & Co.

Another thing she kept on the minimal side: undergarments. Rih forwent a bra (we blurred any relevant bits, but trust us, they were on display) and opted for only the tiniest, filmiest nude thong in order to show off the dress to full effect. And due to the strategic placement of her furry pink stole, even the undies were in question, though when she turned around, they were visible on her hip (they disappeared in the rear view, of course).

Selman is a longtime collaborator with Rihanna’s stylist Mel Ottenberg, and they worked with the singer to make a look Selman described as “fishnet and crystals and a couple of fingers crossed” and called (in the understatement of the year) “a little bit scandalous.” Ottenberg spoke to of the look, saying “I did this look for her so she’d have a good time. This was the perfect night do to something fun, and I wanted her to have something great that you couldn’t find anywhere else in the world.”

We can’t say we’re surprised (and it was nice of her to give us something to discuss) but we want to hear what you think. Tell us in the comments!

Seems like it would make more sense to give this award to Rihanna’s stylist…

Style Icon, are you kidding. She’s is one of the worst dressed every time, including this time. This is not style it’s exhibitionism.

She looks amazing! !! Body , face and dress. How I love my Island girls

Something must have happened to her as a young girl to always be letting everything hang out. There is nothing wrong with having confidence but you don’t have to constantly show your @$$ and t***.

She looks wonderful! So beautiful!

Girl could put on a dishcloth and look good. She is one of those rare women who can put on anything an look fantastic. A little daring yes, but she is a beauty

beautiful girl, beautiful body but it’s OK to cover up sometimes…I will say this: she effortlessly pulls off these hideous outfits and her confidence always shines through…someone like Miley Cyrus would have a stupid, insecure, weird look on her face b/c she knows she doesn’t have the body or face for it.

ps – I totally agree with Barbara and Cindy

Leaves nothing to imagination.

I am not a big fan of hers, but really appreciate the look that she and her stylist work to maintain. My problem with this outfit is that the discussion is about the dress and not her. Style is about the person, fashion is about the dress.
