Met Gala 2014: The Gowns We Were Just Not Crazy About

05/06/2014 at 01:10 AM ET

Monday’s Met Gala had plenty of gowns — some great, some good and some flat-out questionable. In fact, there may have been a higher percentage of questionable looks than usual, which made narrowing down this list very hard. Below, see the four dresses we liked the least (and click here to see every dress from the evening!) — then leave your “biggest miss” look in the comments.

Alex Apatoff, Style News Editor: I hate to repeat this here, because I think Katie Holmes is a very nice person, but this outfit was described by one editor (not me, I swear) as “Drunk Belle from Beauty and the Beast,” and now I can’t un-see it. It’s shapeless. It’s sort of haphazardly embellished. Her posture does nothing for the bodice and the skirt does nothing for her lower half. And that hair. It’s so “I’m boycotting my hairbrush.” Marchesa had a big win Monday night (this gorgeous Karolina Kurkova dress) so I feel confident calling this one a failed experiment and throwing it off the castle roof like Gaston.

Zoë Ruderman, Deputy Style and Beauty Director: You know who doesn’t approve of this Altuzarra dress? Me. And you know who would probably agree with me? This guy, Charles James. But to be frank, it’s not just the fact that she totally missed the mark on the theme; I wouldn’t be into the look even if she wore it on a regular old, non-themed red carpet. The slit felt way too high (and that’s saying something since I like a good slit), the neckline wasn’t flattering and the mass of fabric sitting on her waist is like a sad, half-deflated gold spare tire and it’s bumming me out. I’d talk about the too-matchy-matchy shoes, clutch and jewelry, but I’ve gotta go check my Twitter. I’m waiting for an important DM from someone

Olivia Munn Met Gala 2014Gilbert Flores/Broadimage

Andrea Lavinthal, Style and Beauty Director: Yes, there were far worse looks on the red carpet than this one (hi, Kate Upton!) but Olivia’s bothered me the most and there are two big, inappropriately displayed reasons why. We get that you have a hot body, Olivia, but the Met Gala isn’t the time to show it off, especially when the theme lends itself to elegant ball gowns, not plunging necklines. On a positive note, I do like her hair accessory, which reminds me of Carrie “I put a bird on my head” Bradshaw.

Maggie Gyllenhaal Met Gala 2014Dimitrios Kambouris/Getty

Brittany Talarico, Associate Style Editor: Maggie Gyllenhaal always follows her own fashion rules, but this time I just wish she selected a pretty ball gown to match Charles James’s aesthetic, not this dress, which looks like a cross between a Twister board and curtains that would be suitable for Kevin Arnold’s house on The Wonder Years.

Sure, the actress took a risk in a colorful spotted Valentino gown with a plunging neckline and major cape. But I think it totally flopped in comparison to some of the more glamorous, intricately detailed gowns that other stars wore.

Well, Stylewatch, if you’re going to talk about inappropriate cleavage, how did Beyonce miss your mark? Her gown was atrocious – but, oh yeah, we can’t diss “Bey-Bey” or the “men” will come after us like they did on SNL.

Oh, Maggie. No no no.

I can never understand how someone as pretty as Katie Holmes with as a good a figure as she has always looks like a hot mess. Always! The only time she looks good is when she is in the Bobbi Brown cosmetics ads and presumably has no input in hair, makeup, or styling.

Appreciated this article.
I’m just reading a book called the Tipping Point. It talks about people like Katie Holmes. People who set trends because of a certain something about there persona.
I think that the dress looks like a work of art on Katie. At first glance she looks cluttered but while you were defining the points of fault it all came together as something quite compelling.
Just one mans opinion.

Seriously? No one is going to mention Lupita N’yongo’s neon basketball net?

Oh goodness! Get over the metgala! it’s turned to mush since they NOW let d-listers attend!

Olivia Munn looks hot, the dress is gorgeous and there were soooo many plunging necklines being worn at this event, so why single her out? Your critique makes zero sense.

How is Kate Upton NOT on this list??? Haha

Tabitha Simmons’ gown was a hiddy! A prom gown that someone tried to gussy up with an explosion of paper flowers.

Beyonce and Lupita’s dresses were terrible but I guess since they’re the fashion darlings no one dares criticize them.
