Mindy Kaling's Faux Bangs Were Her Equivalent of a Blonde Wig

We were thrilled when Mindy Kaling kicked off the week with a bang (so to speak), but as we suspected (and much to our dismay), her new look on Monday was solely experimental — for now, at least.

The creator of The Mindy Project, 34, absolutely achieved her goal of looking “like a friend of Pharrell” with her chic fringe, which she debuted on Chelsea Lately. But the actress just “thought it would be fun” to throw in some clip-ins for the night, she explained to PEOPLE on Tuesday at the NBCUniversal press day at the Langham Huntington hotel in Pasadena, Calif.

“I decided I’m going to go with, kind of like, the way that musicians have a blonde wig,” she said with a laugh, referring to her temporary look by the nickname “fangs” (faux bangs). “I’m like, ‘Why does she get to have all the fun?’ I’m not [really] going to wear a blonde wig, but I thought it’d be fun to [change up my look].”

Feeling sad that you had to say goodbye to the bangs so soon? There’s always hope for them to resurface — Kaling’s open to wearing them again. “Yeah, maybe I will!” she says. Think she should?
