Even a star who has her pick of any dress in the fashion universe, like Kate Hudson, still knows the power of a great little black dress. It plays an invaluable role in every woman’s closet, often doing double or triple duty for work, weekend and date night. One way Hudson might differ from the rest of us LBD lovers? She doesn’t just have one or two — she has a ton.

“I think we all agree we love a little black dress,” Hudson says. “It’s one of those things a woman should never be without. I have a whole section in my closet devoted to LBDs!” (Can we hear a little bit more about the other sections? Just one for ponchos? A floor-to-ceiling sunglasses shelf?) So with that in mind, Hudson designed her second collection for Ann Taylor: a five-piece black dress showcase, with names like “The Romantic” and “The Late Nighter.”

Pictured above is the “Best Actress,” modeled on a gown she wore to an event last October. “This is a real showstopper, isn’t it? This one is based on the Ann Taylor gown I wore to the BCRF gala,” she says. “It’s a modern take on a classic black gown. I really love the way this one turned out. It’s a really special dress and I think women will feel beautiful in it.”

Hudson, the face of the brand, has a little design experience under her belt: She created an all-white collection last summer and has been working on her Fabletics brand for nearly a year. But according to the actress, this was particularly special. “I loved working with the design team on these little black dresses. We kind of designed them to fit how I — how we all — live, so there’s something for every occasion.”

The best part? Like any black dress worth its salt, the whole point is that the looks are effortlessly alluring. “An LBD is the sexiest staple in your closet,” Hudson says. Ready to add one to yours? The collection will debut at Ann Taylor this April. Let us know what you think of Hudson’s designs in the comments!

You can never go wrong with a Little Black Dress. I’m liking a lot of the pieces from Kate Hudson’s collection for Ann Taylor. What are your thoughts?

The headline should read “a” not “an.” COME ON, People.

Haven’t bought anything from AT since Kate signed on. She doesn’t represent their aesthetic or target demographic. This is the mall version of Angelina Jolie representing St. John. It just doesn’t fit.

Kate, you are incorrect. “an” is, in fact, grammatically correct.

Is there a less talented person in the celebrity world? I don’t think so. All she has going for her is a famous mother which opens doors for her to play at working. Shame on her for adding so little to the universe.

How many little black dresses does one woman need? She must have a huge walk in closet if one section alone is just for them…sounds excessive.

Kate: A or an – who really cares? In the whole scheme of things, does it really matter?

Oh wow! Such haters! I think Kate Hudson is awesome! Catriona – what exactly have you “added to the universe” that allows you to judge others? Aside from being an actress and a designer – she is also a mother. She also donates her time and money to charities such as Healthy Child Healthy World, WildAid and other wildlife foundations. She is well spoken, funny and beautiful. I have always loved her style so it makes sense that she is now designing. Who cares that her mom is famous? So is her stepdad. She didn’t pick that – but sure – like most smart and/or successful people, she will make the most of the opportunities presented to her.

Btw – her moms book 10 Mindful Minutes is awesome! Anyone with young kids should read it :)
