Camila McConaughey on Her Custom Oscars Gown: I Don't Do a Big Dress Because I'm Not a Nominee

Talk about a power couple: Matthew McConaughey took home an Oscar, while wife Camila’s stunning custom Gabriela Cadena gown beat out some of the night’s nominees for a spot on our editors’ picks list. But the 31-year-old Brazilian beauty says it’s never her intention to be in the spotlight when she’s on the red carpet supporting her man.

“I wanted to keep it simple because I want to show respect toward the reason that I’m there. I think that everybody who goes to a special event has their place,” McConaughey, who teamed up with Bailey’s before the Oscars, tells PEOPLE. “I don’t necessarily feel comfortable showing up with the biggest dress of the night because I’m not one of the nominees.” But despite her best efforts, her pale pink, draped dress with a regal half cape gown was awfully hard to overlook.

McConaughey dished on the process of creating the dress from scratch, looking at numerous sketches and working with the designer to nail down the gown’s shape and pastel color. “The wow factor means doing a silhouette that I’ve never done before … It took me a minute, but I love it!” she says. “We wanted to stick with the natural colors, but I had this one tone that would not leave my mind. We were supposed to do it a different color, but last minute I called and said, ‘Do the dress in this color.’ It was not leaving my mind.”

We think quite a few fashion fans had the same sentiment Sunday night. What do you think of the star’s Oscars outfit? Is she on your Best Dressed list? Tell us below!

Camila may not think her dress was a “big” deal, but she was one of the most beautiful, and beautifully-dressed, women there. Classy. Humble to boot. She was in my Top 5 best dressed!

I understand her point, but it’s very difficult to not get caught up in the excitement of the night-all the pomp and circumstance of it. I don’t blame those women who do choose beautiful dresses. Most people never get the chance to wear something grand, and if you have a legitimate chance and life is so short anyway-what is the terrible harm in going for it? Life is too short to spend it on looking ordinary all the time and not feeling beautiful once in awhile. After all, the actresses performances are where they’re supposed to really shine. No one can take that away from them no matter how good they look.
