Camila McConaughey on Her Custom Oscars Gown: I Don't Do a Big Dress Because I'm Not a Nominee

Talk about a power couple: Matthew McConaughey took home an Oscar, while wife Camila’s stunning custom Gabriela Cadena gown beat out some of the night’s nominees for a spot on our editors’ picks list. But the 31-year-old Brazilian beauty says it’s never her intention to be in the spotlight when she’s on the red carpet supporting her man.

“I wanted to keep it simple because I want to show respect toward the reason that I’m there. I think that everybody who goes to a special event has their place,” McConaughey, who teamed up with Bailey’s before the Oscars, tells PEOPLE. “I don’t necessarily feel comfortable showing up with the biggest dress of the night because I’m not one of the nominees.” But despite her best efforts, her pale pink, draped dress with a regal half cape gown was awfully hard to overlook.

McConaughey dished on the process of creating the dress from scratch, looking at numerous sketches and working with the designer to nail down the gown’s shape and pastel color. “The wow factor means doing a silhouette that I’ve never done before … It took me a minute, but I love it!” she says. “We wanted to stick with the natural colors, but I had this one tone that would not leave my mind. We were supposed to do it a different color, but last minute I called and said, ‘Do the dress in this color.’ It was not leaving my mind.”

We think quite a few fashion fans had the same sentiment Sunday night. What do you think of the star’s Oscars outfit? Is she on your Best Dressed list? Tell us below!

She looks stunning, period. As a model, but also working with designers, she knows her body and knows what will look good on it. The dress shows off her figure without showing off a lot of skin, and at least the color isn’t nude or black — two shades that seemed to dominate the color choices at this year’s Oscars.

Good for you, Camila. Wear what you want! I think your gown was lovely. All the best to you, Matthews, and your children.

I love this couple. Matthew’s acceptance speech was wonderful.

Now that’s the definition of class, all the way around. Irony is, despite her intention to avoid stealing the show, the elegant and modest (yet with her figure, still sexy) beauty of this gown did just that! She can’t help but be stunning. Lucky man.

I also think she was one of the best dressed of that night. The dress was perfect and she proved a women doesn’t need to show skin to be sexy.

She looked beautiful. And I love that she felt it was her husband’s night to shine.
