Kate Mara: 'I Didn't Want to Be Defined By My Hair Color'

Kate Mara has been having a lot of fun with her hair lately, between lopping it all off into a bob and gradually lightening it to its current bright blonde iteration. And she’s loving it as much as you are (“It’s so much easier,” she says).

But though she went short just for fun (the color is for a movie), Mara had a very good reason for wanting to make a big hair change. “I was just ready to not be — this sounds really cheesy — but I didn’t want to be defined by my hair color,” she tells PEOPLE. “My hair has always been crazy long and I was just ready to let that go.”

She’s still experimenting with different looks to go with her blonde hair after years of having her one-length auburn locks. “Obviously the color changes the way makeup looks and the way colors look,” she says. “With my natural red hair I gravitate more towards color, and with the blonder hair I like to wear more neutral things like black and white.” Which is great news for sister Rooney, who also favors that stark color palette — now she’s got twice the clothes to borrow!

What do you think of Mara as a blonde? Do you also change up your wardrobe when you change your hair?

Cute & classy Kate Mara is a pretty girl and a great actress.

Soooo you didn’t want to be defined by your hair color and therefore became a blonde, which is now making headlines. Got it.

Her hair isn’t what defined her it was those amazing eyes.

Love the hair. But come on being defined by your hair? That must only be a celebrity concern…its the silliest thing I’ve ever heard. I had to google her to even know what her hair was like previously.

She had beautiful hair. I don’t like this new blonde look. Now she blends in like the rest of them.

Average looking girl on

She looks horrible, not a good color for her. Not to mention that all this talk about hair kind of makes her sound totally boring…so maybe she IS defined by her hair if that’s all that is newsworthy about her.

I have never thought of my hair as something that “defines” me. Nor, would I want to make headlines just because I changed hair colors or cut it. Anything for 5 minutes of publicity in Hollywood!

I like her but she should never be blonde

Doesn’t going blonde also cause her to be defined by her hair?

I have changed my hair color tons, so I get wanting to try and mix it up. Everyone had their opinion of how I looked “best” but I didn’t care, I pleased myself! However, the blonde really washes her out. Same as Emma Stone. They both look more vibrant and glowing with the reddish hair.
