Ariana Grande's Permanent Ponytail Explained - by the Singer Herself

Even casual followers of Ariana Grande’s singing career have noticed that the star definitely has one hairstyle of choice. It’s (as seen at left) a perky half up-half down combo that includes a ponytail perched right at the crown of her head, curled waves and combed-down bangs. And a cursory look back through the PEOPLE photo archives proves that she’s really commmitted to that do.

So because it’s the internet, and because the internet tends to be full of haters, Grande was taking some grief for never changing up her ’90s-inspired look. Even those of us who find Grande adorable (guilty) were wondering about the inspiration behind her perma-pony. And finally, Grande had enough of the chatter, deciding put it to rest with a rant posted to her Instagram.

Explaining that her hair was destroyed from years of bleaching it and dyeing it red for her Nickelodeon show Sam & Cat, Grande said, “My actual hair is so broken that it looks absolutely ratchet and absurd when I let it down … As annoying as it is for y’all to look at the same hairstyle all the time, it’s all that works for now (and I’m comfortable for the first time in years).”

Read her whole tress manifesto below, then tell us: What do you think of Grande’s rant? Did you realize her hair was so destroyed? Should she cut it all off and start again with a pixie, like Jennifer Lawrence? Let us know below!

Aww, I love her. She’s adorable and has a good voice. She probably would look awesome with a short cut until it grows out and healthy, undamaged hair grows in, but honestly I didn’t realize that her hair was so damaged, just figured she liked that look. Her hair, she’s entitled to grow it out the way she feels most comfortable, so hope that she avoids damaging processes in future so she doesn’t get stuck in that situation again.

I can’t believe people are so rude and mean about a ponytail!! Her hair looks great. People need to start being NICE!!!

What a gracious response to people who don’t even deserve an explanation. She is great.

People can be so very unkind. There is nothing wrong with the way your hair looks and I totally understand. I have had similar issues but for different reasons and have had to do a similar cover up. Occasionally someone will say something to me which is not okay.
Don’t worry!!

I think you’re a beautiful young lady with an incredible singing voice. Who cares what anyone else thinks about your ponytail. I don’t think you should have to explain anything. Keep on being you!!!

She’s got money to fix it. It is annoying to see the same hairstyle. She clams up for awards shows with same do.. wtf ariana grande

I think she would look very cute with a pixie cut. But whatever is comfortable for her is what she should do.

I think her ponytail makes her look adorable. People should only worry about what’s on their own head.

Poor thing. I cut my hair recently like Jennifer Lawrence for the same reason. It’s quite the adjustment dealing with short hair. Rock your pony Ariana and keep singing.

Even if she wanted to cut it, to make the “growing out” period shorter, it doesn’t mean she has to go pixie. It’s long enough to cut off 6″ and it would still be long and she could still wear her “pony”. But it’s her hair, she should do whatever is right for her. Not everybody wants to cut their hair. Myself, I don’t care. I figure, it would grow back. I’ve had long and ultra short, like it both ways.
