Chanel Wants You to Wear Bridal Sneakers. Are You In?

Any girl who grew up in the 1990s can tell you that one of the best bridal accessories of all time were Annie Banks’s wedding sneakers in Father of the Bride. And it looks like Karl Lagerfeld still has his VHS copy of the film in heavy rotation, because 22 years later, he’s bringing the same sporty bridal look to the runway.

In fact, high-fashion athletic gear was a recurring theme in the designer’s Chanel Haute Couture fall/winter show — many models hit the catwalk in glittering kneepads and fanny packs to go with the lace, tulle and sequin-accented sneakers. But it was the final, bridal look, featuring model-of-the-moment Cara Delevingne, that had us buzzing.

Wearing an over-the-top feather headpiece and accompanied by “ringbearer” Hudson Kroenig in a fully sequined miniature suit jacket, Delevingne descended the stairs of Chanel’s famously opulent set to close the show. And as bizarre as it is to mentally associate “Chanel” with “athletic shoes,” we have to give Lagerfeld credit for eliminating one of a bride’s biggest fears: tripping down the aisle in heels.

So what do you think: Yea or nay to bridal sneakers? Can Chanel make them cool? Weigh in below!

Yea on the sneakers, but only during the reception so I can dance/socialize in comfort!

I was wearing 5inch white runners under my wedding dress… i also wear my heels…. i don’t see a big deal!

Oli on

I would for the reception and maybe dancing, but only if they don’t show under the dress

Coco Chanel was a Nazi spy. I wouldn’t wear anything with that name or insignia. Great style can be found elsewhere that doesn’t requireme to exalt the name of a villain.

NO and no!

I wouldnt. Women walk different in sneakers and heels. I hate when the bride and bridesmaids switch to flip flops at weddings if you can see them. It looks so tacky.

I wore white Converse sneakers under my wedding dress. Guys wore black ones. Best decision ever and most photographed accessory at wedding was the bride and groom converse

I wore Nikes for my wedding! Hot pink sequined Air Rifts!

I wore white keds with lace on them and under my wedding dress 20 years ago. Best decision!
