Julia Roberts's Golden Globes Dress: We're Taking Sides

The stars gave us plenty to talk about on the red carpet at Sunday night’s Golden Globes, but there were a few that had us completely divided. And what fun would it be if we didn’t have some spirited debate about the fashion? Julia Roberts had us (and PEOPLE Red Carpet Instagram followers) buzzing the loudest when she stepped out of the limo in Dolce & Gabbana — so we decided to take sides.

PRO: Whitney Little, Associate Producer: My first thought upon seeing Julia step onto the red carpet: “Oh no.” Then I watched as she did her red carpet interviews, and she worked some sort of voodoo magic on me because now I am obsessed with this entire outfit. Hear me out, OK?

Jessica Alba demonstrated how to appropriately rock a white button-up shirt on the red carpet, but nobody ever expected to see it at one of the biggest awards shows of the year. Plus, the black dress perfectly hugged her curves, the sparkly belt added a touch of glam to the ensemble and I personally think the white button-up adds an element of surprise to what could have potentially been a snoozy choice.

Could anyone else have rocked this look? Probably not. But we’re not talking about just anyone — we’re talking about one of the classiest actresses of our time, and if she wants to wear a button-down on the red carpet then I’ll absolutely love it. Thanks for keeping us on our toes, Julia.

CON: Alex Apatoff, Style News Editor: I was in a sorority, so I am going to adhere to a strict “PRO-CON-PRO” policy here, in which I am going to sandwich my criticism in compliments to cushion the blow. So let’s start with something nice: Her whole head looks great — fabulous hair and pretty makeup. Nice job there.

As for the dress. It’s very “woman of a certain age,” which Roberts, 46, certainly is not. It makes her look like she needs to conceal her upper arms, which she most certainly does not either. And on a night when her movie is heavily nominated and she’s going to be the center of attention, I’m just not sure “matronly” and “charity ball” is the best look to aim for.

To end on a happy note, she’ll have lots of opportunities to redeem herself throughout awards season. C’mon, Julia, let’s see those guns at the SAGs!

I’m divided as well. For one, the look is very interesting, I even tried something similar myself once. But for a Golden Globe Awards look, it seems too office like, despite the sparkly belt around the waist. I don’t know, it’s the effect the white shirt has on me. 😊

I actually like the look but the problem I have with it is the hair. The hair made it look matronly and older than her years.

Teknosbeka on

Its unexpected, but I like it! Agree the hair and makeup is totally fab.

I personally think it is to (or is it ‘too’?) “Office Christmas…er…Holiday…Party and not enough “Golden Globes Redcarpet Glam”. Maybe if it was a sparklier shirt to match the belt.

Minnie Driver wore this outfit in 1998 in “The Governess”

I actually think that just the black part, without the white top would have made a beautiful dress

Amy on

Love it!

Horrid! The eye makeup makes her eyes look hooded, even though in other pictures Ive never noticed them looking hooded, so I do think its the way the eye shadow & liner are done. The white part of this dress makes her look like she has chubby arms when we all know she doesnt. And the hair style is dated and doesnt do a whole lot for her. I think this is the worst red carpet look I have ever seen on her, and she would be smart to fire her stylist and glam squad for letting her walk the red carpet in this look.

Totally different and unexpected. A winner in my book!

This is the kind of dress I would wear and I’m a FRUMPY HOUSEWIFE who lives in her bathrobe lol.

Was it cold or something?? It looks like a shirt under her evening gown.

The dress is confusing but oddly enough in a good way but I think if you have to think too hard about whether you like the dress or not it’s probably a FAIL. It should be obvious if you like the dress at first glance it’s a Pass if you have to examine the dress and analyze your thoughts then it’s probably a FAIL. Makes sense???? LOL, maybe not.

LuvLeeRita on

Well if nothing else, it does look comfortable.

Didn’t Merl Streep wear this exact dress a year or two ago?

Julia looks lovely, but it does make her look like she’s conceding her youth is behind her.

Nope. Bland..boring…like Julia herself.

Unexpected, but better than letting everything all hang out like some do. Leave something to the imagination…!

Love, love, love this dress!

It is not dressy enough for
the occasion. Too b-o-r-i-n-g!

Julia looks absolutely stunning..

i’m sorry, but as much as i like julia roberts, that dress was horrible. why was a blouse stuck on the top of it – not even an interesting blouse.

angryinnv on

i like julia roberts, but this dress was horrible. it looks like someone shoved a plain white blouse in the top of it. no a good look at all.

She looks like I did in Catholic high school in sewing class. Wearing my “uniform” blouse while trying on the gown that I am making for my senior prom !

i loved julia dress it is so cute

Dress is beautiful and appropriate. Julia is a natural beauty, so could have done without all the dark eye makeup, very distracting.

jane on

It looks like something I’d put together when I played dress up.

She looks fabulous!

I think that the belt definitely is what throws the look off. Otherwise, she looks great.Didn’t see a pic of Jessica Alba and being that she typically dresses impeccably I am sure the look was beautiful. But did you guys forget that Sharon Stone iconically rocked a Gap white button down with a Vera Wang skirt at the 98 Oscars!?!

FAIL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! WEIRD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! NOT attractive, at all!!!!!!!!!!!!

Julia is my all time favorite actress/ celebrity. THIS IS AMAZING. She looks elegant and comfortable at the same time. Love everything about this dress and her whole look GORGEOUS top item on my bucket list to one day meet Julia in person. Im almost 50 so I need to start saving.

I think Julia has started dressing for comfort and not to dazzle anyone. Her last few looks have not been flattering to her, but I think she’s at a point where she doesn’t care what others think as long as she’s comfortable. More power to her!

nice dress, but not for GG.

Ive seen the articles with pics of her w unshaved underarms. So when I read the part about ‘its as if shes trying to conceal her upper arms’ all I could think was ‘I bet I know y’ hehehe good for her, shes being true to herself and dressing at her comfort level

Love Julia but this is too casual……a fashion miss. Go more glam, Julia, you are gorgeous.

Jo on

The hair doesn’t match the dress.

And, I wouldn’t call her a classy actress – she is a home wrecker, you know.

cynda p on

I have never been a fan of her red carpet looks. She wore a leopard/sparkly number last week that looked like it was taken out of Phyllis Diller’s closet.

It looks like 2 designers got drunk

Charlotte on

I really do like this! Different.

shannon on

I’m not digging it! Looks like she just pulled a dress over her shirt!

This “dress” was one of the worst I’ve seen on the Red Carpet. How did her style team let her get out of the limo in this get-up? I mean, it’s nice to be all comfy, but when you are at an awards show and you will be televised and you are a “movie star” you need to get dressed up!

frosty7530 on

Julia looks so pretty from the neck up, her make-up and hair are perfect! The dress crossed with a simple casual shirt is outrageous. Who ever styled her needs to be fired. Taking a slinky D&G gown, and trying to convert it into a Jr. League Jumper is ridiculous. I think actresses of a certain age are entitled to wear elegant gowns that are appropriate without looking matronly. I recall that the late Bill Blass, once one of America’s premier designers, was noted for mixing casual w/elegant in re to his ball gown designs. He would use fabrics, as a way of injecting a subtle dress-down effect for his ball gowns. Mr. Blass, would not have been capable, of designing anything as tacky as what Ms. Roberts wore.
