Kate's Official Baby Portrait Dress: All the Scoop Straight From the Designer

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge bucked several longtime traditions for the first official portraits with Prince George. First, the photo was snapped by Kate’s father Michael in his backyard. And second, rather than consult a stylist with racks of designer outfits for the new mom to wear, the princess chose a maternity dress from her own closet — an item that she bought several months ago from the high-street brand (and one of her go-to labels during pregnancy) Séraphine.

She loves the floaty, empire-line “Jolene” dress so much, she bought it in three colors: Fuchsia, navy and blossom print (the latter of which she wore the day after she left the hospital headed for her parents’ home in Bucklebury).

It’s clearly a dress that she feels comfortable in and one that suits her new life as a mom. And true to the Duchess’s practical style sensibility, it only costs $79.

“We knew she really liked that dress, but to see her wearing it nearly a month after the birth – it’s so exciting!” says Cecile Reinaud, the founder of the maternity label. “She looks so beautiful in those pictures but also so natural. I think it’s a huge compliment to her that she looks like that in a snapshot, without a top-notch photographer with retouching and everything.”

Seeing as Kate owns twelve items from the brand — they hand-deliver her orders directly to Kensington Palace, just a stone’s throw from their flagship store — Reinaud is thrilled that the princess is still wearing maternity clothes almost one month after giving birth, noting that many celebrities tend to want to show off their unbelievable post-baby shape in regular clothing as soon as possible. “It’s a lovely message to all moms out there: She is not trying to pretend that she’s already lost all her baby weight and that’s really refreshing.”

Looking to nab one of Kate’s favorite dresses for yourself? You’ll have to be patient: It’s on back order until Sept. 16. “We sold over 100 dresses between the hours of 2:00 a.m. and 7:00 a.m.,” Rinaud says. Tell us: Do you love Kate’s dress? And how cute is baby George?

I wonder how much this photographer got paid to shoot into the sunlight. if they turned 90 degrees they wouldnt have glare coming off the tops of their heads. amateur move

Kate’s dad needs to not shoot into the sun. I guess they “bucked royal tradition” by having a very amateur shot. basic move, bro, don’t shoot into the sunlight.

Cute pic, but I wish they were wearing their wedding bands in it. Seems odd that they wouldn’t. Not like divorce-odd, just odd that they chose not to wear them for such an important photo.

What a perfect family photo. I wish them nothing but the best

Her beautiful, simple, and elegant style never ceases to amaze me. This picture looks like something me or my friends would have taken right after we had our children. That’s what I love about her. I love William’s casual cotton oxford and slacks as well.

Beautiful. I wish, though, that the media would refer to her as “Catherine”, as she and William have asked.

Kate is indeed wearing her slender wedding band and her/Diana’s engagement ring in the photos. William announced before the wedding that he would not wear a wedding band. Catherine is in fact a princess of the UK, taking the title HRH Princess William of Wales upon her marriage. Only princesses born into the royal family take their own first name following the title. The Queen created William Duke of Cambridge upon the marriage, which automatically made Catherine Duchess of Cambridge. Since Catherine is now a royal highness through her marriage, was were Diana and Fergie, Prince George is ‘fully’ royal – not a commoner – the same as William, Harry, Beatrice and Eugenie are also royals. The photos may be not be ‘professional’ but they are lovely and an expression of the closeness among all members of the family, including the Middletons. Diana would be so happy at the success of her childrearing and in William’s choice of a wife. By marrying Catherine, he also attained a ‘normal’ intact family, something he did not experience as a child. I am sure the normalcy of the Middletons is a breath of fresh air to the stuffiness of being reared in the royal bubble.
