Kate's Official Baby Portrait Dress: All the Scoop Straight From the Designer

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge bucked several longtime traditions for the first official portraits with Prince George. First, the photo was snapped by Kate’s father Michael in his backyard. And second, rather than consult a stylist with racks of designer outfits for the new mom to wear, the princess chose a maternity dress from her own closet — an item that she bought several months ago from the high-street brand (and one of her go-to labels during pregnancy) Séraphine.

She loves the floaty, empire-line “Jolene” dress so much, she bought it in three colors: Fuchsia, navy and blossom print (the latter of which she wore the day after she left the hospital headed for her parents’ home in Bucklebury).

It’s clearly a dress that she feels comfortable in and one that suits her new life as a mom. And true to the Duchess’s practical style sensibility, it only costs $79.

“We knew she really liked that dress, but to see her wearing it nearly a month after the birth – it’s so exciting!” says Cecile Reinaud, the founder of the maternity label. “She looks so beautiful in those pictures but also so natural. I think it’s a huge compliment to her that she looks like that in a snapshot, without a top-notch photographer with retouching and everything.”

Seeing as Kate owns twelve items from the brand — they hand-deliver her orders directly to Kensington Palace, just a stone’s throw from their flagship store — Reinaud is thrilled that the princess is still wearing maternity clothes almost one month after giving birth, noting that many celebrities tend to want to show off their unbelievable post-baby shape in regular clothing as soon as possible. “It’s a lovely message to all moms out there: She is not trying to pretend that she’s already lost all her baby weight and that’s really refreshing.”

Looking to nab one of Kate’s favorite dresses for yourself? You’ll have to be patient: It’s on back order until Sept. 16. “We sold over 100 dresses between the hours of 2:00 a.m. and 7:00 a.m.,” Rinaud says. Tell us: Do you love Kate’s dress? And how cute is baby George?

Every time William speaks of her, he calls her Catherine. Her parents call her Catherine; her sister and brother call her Catherine; her father-in-law calls her Catherine, so does Prince Henry (nickname Harry). Her NAME is Catherine. So whence this “Kate” business in all the media?????

Gosh I’m glad I didn’t have to pose for anything like that with my newborn. I never wore dresses or makeup, I was soooo TIRED (not because he cried, but because I was just sooooo tired).

this bothers me. a whole story was concocted from a DRESS.
For all we know shes most likely working her ass off to get that weight off…who wouldnt? especially one whos constantly in the media?? she had a Gym installed in Clarance house when she was living with William, what makes u think she doesnt have one installed in her parents house??? Oh! the life of a Celebrity. Theyre different from us…stop trying to tell us theyr like us. THEYRE NOT! And its OK. thats why im fascinated with them and not my neighbor.

Dear JD:
MMMMM. you seem to be consumed with criticism. So sad. Why don’t you do us a favor and end it for yourself. Yes the Royal couple looks wonderful.

Surprised William isn’t wearing a wedding band!

It’s weird to see one of the most powerful couples in the world be normal – getting iphone snapshots by her dad in their backyard.

I think the dress costs 79 pounds, not US dollars, so about $120 or so US/Canadian dollars. A little expensive for most ordinary folks as a casual dress but a bargain for a Princess. But she would make a burlap bag look beautiful. Good for her!

How can you tell your life is pathetic? When you dolt on about an inexpensive dress

Canada, you and JD are perfect examples. Moan. Whine. Please do go get a life

She is just stunning, dresses beautifully and doesn’t care to be seen with still a belly, not like other “famous” people that I know. Beautiful couple.
