Demi Lovato's Blonde Hair: 'I Don't Really Care If People Like It Or Not'

If Demi Lovato still had to do reports on how she spent her summer vacation, we can bet she’d sum it up in one sentence: “I just kept getting blonder and blonder.”

From the honey hue she debuted in May, the singer has kept lightening up to the almost platinum shade she’s sporting today — and she’s been loving every step of the way.

And so have her fans. “The overall reaction is … people like it!” Lovato told PEOPLE, before adding, “I don’t really care if people like it or not. I like being blonde and it’s fun for the summertime.”

She admits that the decision to dye was spontaneous — and her next one will be too. “I never know what I’m going to do next,” she said. “Maybe like a honey brown or a dirty blonde or something, so it’s not too blonde.”

How does her hair handle all that back-and-forth? “What I do is just take care of it a lot,” she shared. “I do olive oil treatments, which are really easy. Also, because of my [Hispanic ethnicity], my hair is really strong naturally.”

Tell us: How often do you dye your hair? How do you keep it healthy?

It doesn’t matter how strong your hair is, it can only take so much coloring before it gets weak and brittle. She probably has extensions too, which is damaging to the scalp.

Jolene on

I’m glad she doesn’t care what other people think of her! Good for her! Just be who you are, do what you want, and you’ll be the happiest of all…

debbie on

I think she gets her eye make up tips from Avril.

Jessica on

I find her to be incredibly beautiful.

bkable on

I don’t care how “strong” your hair is, it is NOT healthy to go from dirty blonde to platinum blonde to honey brown in 6 months.
But you know what? Its not my hair. She’s 21… when her hair is dead by 30, I don’t wanna hear her whining.

Kat on

This is perfect. She doesn’t care about what I think of her hair and I don’t care about her hair. (I just clicked on the link to read all about it…)

She said in a previous article the reason she dyes her hair so much is because of her Bipolar disorder. So what? She constantly changes her mind. I think its actually kind of cool she uses her hair as outlet.

Go Demi.

Well thanks Demi, I thought we were friends :(

Well, since she does not care what people thing about her hair, I have decided that I will not care that she does not care about what people think about her hair. If you do not care that I do not care that she does not care about what people think about her hair, there is no need to post that sentiment on this message board.

I don’t care what she does with her hair, I’m sure she don’t care what I do with mine. Just tell people u’ve been really happy with ur style lately and if ur happy right on. Adding on that *u don’t care* is almost a way to push more of a reaction out of others

I think she looks pretty in blonde! And just pretty in general. She seems like a cool girl :) Glad she doesn’t care what people think, why should she?

Demi is still gonna be herself no matter or whether she changes her hair style her hair color…like seriously it dont matter but she is being herself and that matters more than people judging about her looks. Im 15 and i love this stuff.

Whatever on

…She says as she then dyes it back to dark next week.

suzydiamond on

Well, there’s a comment section, so my comment IS it’s too bleachy blond. Looks cheap!

Charli on

I like her! She seems like a nice, sensible girl.

lilkunta on

exactly what maria said. being hispanic doesnt mean your hair is strong. take care of it. like you said olive oil treatments and deep conditioners.

Not everyone is meant to be blonde. Vanessa Hudgens is blonde,Taylor Swift is blonde, and now she’s blonde. next thing you know selena gomez is going to be blonde.

Patty on

Wont she care when people don’t buy her albums!

I couldn’t care less who dyes their hair but what I never will understand is why those who choose to do it make it so obvious that it is dyed? She looks fake because she doesn’t look like she should be a blond. Complexion etc. isn’t what I perceive a blond to look at. It’s like when African American women dye their hair blond. I mean, if you are going to dye your hair at least make it look realistic. Kelly Osbourne is another example. Her purple hair looks so fake and also makes her look like my late Grandmother.

Looks great! Her skin tone looks perfect with that color. Very few people can pull that off!

You know my motto, don’t give a rat azz what people think! Its your hair, your money do you girl!……She was probably answering the question from some dumb reporter that asked her that.

Kerricatt on

I think it looks great Demi!

amaryllis on

Not a good look.

Whatever, I am hispanic and my hair is very fine and fragile.

Yes, because that is what people do when they absolutely don’t care about an article about her hair. They click on the link and read all about it, because they just don’t care. You do realize that sounds idiotic, right?

Demi is Pretty no matter what

Karen on

Her eyebrows are too dark. The up keep is going to time consuming.Prefer her dark hair.Sorry.

haplesswonderer on

That’s funny that she care if people like her hair or not, because we don’t care either.

Jamie on

Who cares about Demi ? She is so annoying, enough already, just go away

Me on

If she doesn’t care what I think of her hair color, then she isn’t going to care that I think she is a self absorbed nut job! Good for her, I guess.

WhiteLily30 on

I think it looks good on her. Why shouldn’t she have some fun with her hair?? Everyone else does!

amanda on

I thought it was unhealthy for ur hair to keep getting dyed. Like in the last year she has had like 5 different hair colors. Demi said in an interview that shes bipolar so how she deals with it she changes her hair color with the mood shes in at that moment. I really like the red on her or black or the pink ends like she did last summer. I get my hair highlighted once a year.

cindy on

Did u read her story so dosent care what u ppl think. Do u think she is really going to read your comments! Yall just jealous causer she is better looking than you

Ruby on

Isn’t funny how someone that states that “they do not care” actually believe the opposite? It’s merely a defensive front. I’m sorry, but she just doesn’t look well with light hair, maybe since her natural hue is darker… But it just looks unnatural and not very healthy. But hey, do whatever you want. You’ve certainly got the funds to do it! I wish I could afford the items the 1% are able to purchase.

Janna on

As a hairstylist for 20+ years, I honestly think it is brassy, cheap, and garish. Her colorist needs to put their license back in the Cheerios box where they found it and give her money back. It’s not even a good blonde tone.

rothiam on

Uh, shut up about the hair and just sing, girl!

Paige on

I loved her with the brown hair, but it wasn’t bad with the honey blond. As long as she likes it that’s all that matter right? I just hope she doesn’t pull a Miley and cuts it all off.
