In our weekly round-up of what we’re seeing sizzle (and fizzle) on the red carpet, we noticed that stars were going back to basics (with two-tone looks and super-simple hair) — and those who tried something funkier (like a jumpsuit) didn’t quite get it right.

Up: Black and white. It may be the first day of summer, but you’d hardly know it to click through “Last Night’s Look!” Stars from Taylor Swift to Michelle Obama to Sophia Bush to Gwyneth Paltrow (and let’s not forget Madonna) chose to forgo summer’s bright, juicy hues in favor of duo-chromatic looks. Everyone looks chic, but c’mon, ladies, let’s see some color!

Up: Sleek, straight strands. Also counterintuitive: It’s officially beachy waves season, but lots of stars left their curling irons unplugged, opting instead for a stick-straight blowout. Sandra Bullock, Reese Witherspoon and even Beyoncé did their flat irons proud this week.

Down: Not-quite-there jumpsuits. There’s nothing wrong with a jumpsuit, as basically every single person in Hollywood can attest. But there were a few things wrong with the jumpsuits stars were wearing this week. From fit issues to strange prints to funky styling, we just weren’t feeling the looks the stars were sporting. There’s always next week!

Another trend with hair is the straight/sleek look swept to the side. Many stars (including myself) have reinvented this 80’s look with curls to the side, half corn rowed (Khole Kardashian), and many other fantastic variations. I love it!

Stick straight hair is actually fairly boring, unless it is your natural look. I can see, however, there are people making a lot of money from those rushing to their “blow-out salons”. Seems like the “Emperor’s New Clothes” to me; constant care and no “care-free summer days”. If you have natural curls or waves when you come out of the water, why not enjoy “your” hair? JMHO

a pant-set doesn’t equate to a jumpsuit….fashion blog? not.

I’m struggling with all three aspects of this story: 1) When did black and white become a “trend”? Black and white are anything but trendy! 2) Straight hair – again not trendy. Many of us were born with it. 3) Jumpsuits are one-piece. Eva Longoria is wearing a pant suit, not a jump suit.

It’s time to get a new editor, People.
