Dolce & Gabbana Found Guilty of Tax Evasion, Sentenced to Jail Time

The fashion police have finally put someone behind bars.

After more than seven months on trial for tax evasion, Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana (the design duo behind the celeb-loved line that carries their names) were convicted and sentenced Wednesday to 20 months in jail, according to WWD.

The designers had already been hit with a $440 million fine by Italy’s Tax Commission as punishment for their crimes, which stemmed from a 2008 investigation into the 2004 sale of Dolce & Gabbana to a Luxembourg-based company. Italian officials believed they were using it as a holding company, designed to keep the designers from paying Italy’s high corporate tax rates.

Although the case had been dismissed once (in 2011), and though their lawyer had requested a full acquittal in the current trial, Italian judge Antonella Brambilla saw enough merit in the case to put the designers behind bars.

The duo plans to appeal, but in the meantime, we wonder if we can expect plenty of stripes from their spring collection this September.

Tell us: What do you think of the ruling?

So glad I can’t afford their product! I wouldn’t want to be one of the people who’s helping them be rich while their not even paying their taxas…

You guys really dont know whats behind the fashion designers industry…. It is all make believe!! A lot of fashion houses now are at the brink of extinction. Yes, they are expensive but they also pay very high expenses!! And in Europe, nothing is free and cheap! And did I mention that Europe is in crisis??

Italy has a lot of corruption. It could be possible they aren’t guilty. They do not have a very reliable justice system there. I wouldn’t throw stones about this without knowing all the facts. And even if they are guilty, when socialism penalizes you for success to the point that your business can barely break even because of outrageous tax rates, cheating becomes common. It will happen here if things don’t change.

true. Amanda Knox comes to mind.

I enjoy their colognes. It bothers me to see people so rich and yet try to beat taxes. Yet I was hoping the justice system would start using jail alternatives to punishments for crimes. I think there are other solutions in lieu of jail for many. It is not the most effective or humane system for treating or preventing crimes. Seems govt is always out to humiliate. Make them pay the taxes and fine them two years profits to go to the hungry or clean water solutions.
