After seven years of marriage, Dean McDermott wanted to change things up a little.

So when he approached L.A. jewelry designer Neil Lane about creating a special anniversary gift for his wife Tori Spelling, McDermott cut to the chase: “Dean wanted something unusual, different and something very special and celebratory,” Lane tells PEOPLE. “Every year he gets Tori a ring to honor a renewal of their vows and this year, their 7th year of marriage, was really important to him. He loves her so much and it had to be special.”

Mission accomplished. After Lane mulled over many designs in short order — “I had less than a week to come up with the perfect gift,” he says — the result was a dazzling ring set in 18k gold with over 150 small rose cut diamonds, for a total of about 3 carats. And the fun part? “It spins around!” says the celebrated jeweler. “It’s a diamond ball, a little diamond world, and Tori can spin it on her finger.”

While the unique effect may be playful, the ring’s meaning is deeply romantic. “Tori and Dean are so interconnected and she is, literally and spiritually, the world to him. I wanted to make a sphere, a world all in diamonds,” says Lane. “To make it sexy, a little Hollywood with a bit of a vintage feel, I put diamonds in it and the spinning movement represents how their worlds revolve around each other.”

When McDermott surprised Spelling with it last week, she was floored. “Tori loved it!” says Lane, who has worked with the couple for years. “Dean is very romantic and sentimental and he totally adores her. The ring represents the significance of their relationship. She rocks his world!”

Honestly…’s really unattractive. I can only imagine how much it costs but it looks really cheap and tacky.

Beautiful ring! Love that she gets one every year and that this one spins is really unique!

That is the ugliest thing ever! She won’t be able to wear it,
she’s so thin, it will make her topple over.
He could have did better than that!

Look up German manufacturer Teufel. They have made spinning rings for years–I’ve had a really simplified version since 2006.

Grandma always said if you can’t say something nice you could always say it was interesting. This ring is interesting. One question though, to anyone…why doesn’t this couple get such a hard time for their relationship starting as an affair? None of my business really but I do wonder why some couples get hounded for years and others seem to just slip on by….

I wonder who PAID for the ring….

These two never cease to amaze me with the things they do to try and stay in the spotlight. And like Tori herself, this ring does nothing for me.

That…… has got to be the gaudiest, tackiest pos I have ever seen. Note to Mr McDermott: Bigger isn’t always better. And spinning? Never good.

Did she pay for that herself?
