Red Carpet Trend Report: The Scoop On Red Nails, White Pumps and '80s Updos

In our weekly round-up of what we’re seeing sizzle (and fizzle) on the red carpet, we saw a lot of white pumps and red nails — and to complete our 1980s flashback, we saw one very elaborate updo straight out of ’87 that made us glad we’re in 2013.

Up: Red nails. Neutral nails? Not this week. We saw bright red talons on everyone from Zoë Saldana to Katy Perry to Florence Welch (not to mention Julianne Hough, above). We tend to reach for the bright pinks and light purples during the spring, but love the way a racy bright red hue revs up a more formal look.

Up: White pumps. We’re still not sure we’re sold on this trend, but half of Hollywood (including Christina Ricci) apparently disagrees with us. Within the last week, we saw the look on at least five stars, all in very different attire, which could be just the push we need to give the look a shot. It may not be worth laying out mega-bucks on a pair, but there’s no denying they lend a fresh edge to jeans and dresses.

Down: Overdone updos. We love Dynasty as much as the next person (so: a lot), but Kate Moss‘s tribute may be a touch too literal. The fur, the jewels and that majorly flippy, curled and teased look are a little aging on the perpetually ageless supermodel — and if even Kate Moss can’t pull it off, it’s not a look we’d recommend for most people.

Red nails and white pumps define – the 80s ? LOL
Clue: both are timeless. Let’s get some fashion police that are over 20 years old, please.

There is nothing wrong with big hair! Better than the long, stringy, flat 60’s look!

Thank you blair. Couldn’t agree with you more!

This wasn’t MY 80’s hair!! I had the shaved temples and feathered layers!

Kate Moss was at a themed party so you can all breath easy. She isn’t trying to make these looks hot again.

I don’t think anyone who was alive in the actual 80s can pull off the retro thing now

Why are we constantly bringing back 80’s fashions? I swear every year they claim this is the ‘hot new thing’? ….

80s were the best decade ever. End of story. LOL. (I’m also a little biased, being an 80s/90s child!)

Kate Moss’ hairstyle is more 1992 and channels Ivana Trump on the cover of Vogue. No one wore their hair like that in 1987; I should know, I graduated from high scholl that year.

did red nails really go out? I did love my white pumps in the 80’s, even with lacy socks!!
