Women often look to girlfriends for outfit approval, but Modern Family‘s Sarah Hyland turns to someone slightly more, uh, masculine: her boyfriend.

“His opinion means a lot to me,” Hyland says in the 2013 issue of TEENProm, referring to her beau, actor Matt Prokop.”If he says he likes it, then I’m like, ‘Okay this is good.'”

Recently, the actress has stepped up her style game (even co-designing her Emmys dress), but she insists that she’s always loved experimenting with clothes. “I think fashion is a way of expressing yourself and who you are,” she explains. “I’ve always expressed myself through my style, from when I was a child playing dress up to now.”

And while a lot of young starlets might over-think their fashion choices, Hyland is happy to go with the flow. “I don’t think you ever make fashion mistakes because if you like it at that time, then it wasn’t a mistake,” she says, adding defiantly, “I don’t think people’s opinions should matter too much.”

To read more of Hyland’s interview — and to see some pretty prom dress picks — grab the 2013 issue of TEENProm, on newsstands Dec. 25. Tell us: Do you ask your boyfriend if your outfit is okay?
