Nicole Richie Has 'Fashion Star' to Thank for Her Macy's Clothing Line

These days, girls dream of dressing like Nicole Richie, but growing up, the starlet wanted to resemble someone else.

“My biggest style icon has been my mother,” the designer says in the clip above. “She was the first person I watched get ready and she looked so beautiful. I remember looking at her and thinking I wanted to look just like her.” (And as she said Monday when releasing her fragrance details, smell like her, too.)

Using that inspiration, Richie is gearing up to release her fourth fashion line, Nicole Richie for Macy’s Impulse, on Sept. 12. “With women today, we’re wearing so many different hats,” she says. “That’s why I worked with mixing the more masculine fabrics, like the faux leather, with the feminine, like the chiffon or the lace, because it’s my nod to the modern American woman, who probably cannot describe themselves with one word or one fabric.”

Aside from wearing “the hat” of a designer, the mom of two also recently completed her stint as a mentor on Fashion Star — a gig that actually led to this new line.

“[Fashion Star] really gave me the opportunity to listen each week to the buyers,” she admits. “I learned that the Macy’s girl is one to go toward more of an eclectic style. They love to mix prints, mix fabrics — definitely someone who loves to have fun with fashion.” And someone who sounds a lot like Richie. Tell us: Are you excited for Nicole Richie for Macy’s Impulse to hit stores?
