Catherine Zeta-Jones

Looking at Catherine Zeta-Jones now, you wouldn’t think the seriously elegant actress ever had a bad hair day … or a bad hair phase, for that matter. But in a recent chat with PEOPLE, she admitted that she gave her locks lots of volume in that oh-so-stylish era, the 1980s.

“I must say I had big hair,” the Rock of Ages star shared. “Oh for god’s sake, my hair was so big, if I sat in the front row of a Clash show, people behind me couldn’t see.”

The hair was only part of the look, though; Zeta-Jones said that because her mom was liberal with cosmetics — “She never was one of those moms who was like, ‘Don’t put on makeup,'” she recalled — she was into bright colors, too. “I was one of those with the under-striping blush,” she admitted.

If only we could see a photo! Hear more from the star in the latest issue of PEOPLE, on newsstands now.
