WATCH: Go Inside Tommy Hilfiger's Ultra-Luxe New York Penthouse

06/01/2012 at 03:00 PM ET

Tommy Hilfiger lives a glamorous life. He’s played volleyball with Prince William near his home on Mustique (“He was great; his bodyguard was better”) and lunched with Jennifer Lopez. He’s also preparing to accept a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Council of Fashion Designers of America during their awards gala on June 4.

But when it came to decorating his apartment at New York’s historic Plaza Hotel, he and his wife, handbag designer Dee, had one very simple goal in mind: “The idea was to make it a family home because we have a lot of children,” he says of the six kids he and Dee have from previous relationships — plus their son Sebastian, 2. “We are the new Brady Bunch. We didn’t want some big, grand, cavernous place. We wanted it to be cozy.”

So the Hilfigers painstakingly restored two floors of the historic hotel to “bring back its old-world charm” and mixed in their own  “modern vibe.” The highlights? A Damien Hirst piece given to them by friend Mick Jagger, a James Bond-esque flat-screen TV hidden behind a gilded two-way mirror in the master bedroom and the custom mural by Eloise illustrator Hilary Knight, which depicts all seven kids frolicking in Central Park.

Most of the Hilfigers’ kids (including designer Ally) are grown up and out of the house now, leaving Sebastian with the run of the place. “He can go anywhere he wants,” says Tommy. Adds Dee: “We’ve got the house pretty much baby-proofed.” Take a look inside the Hilfigers’ gorgeous home in the clip above, and see additional photos in this week’s issue of PEOPLE, on newsstands now.

I could leave without seeing this but I saw it anyway. Nice to see that reach people have a nice lifestyle. Nothing like that on this side but I like it anyway.

Yay… Am I supposed to applaud overindulgent rich folks when I watch families who struggle just to feed their kids because the rich keep getting richer and the poor have no where to go. Just yet another fine example of the American Way!!! to go.
