With Kentucky Derby hats, there’s just one rule: the bigger the better. Sure, the day is about horses, but let’s be honest — the toppers are pretty fun to watch, too.

So how to best showcase a head-turning hat? In the past, several stars have worn theirs with little white dresses, keeping the focus up top. In 2009, Kim Kardashian (left) went basic in a white sheath, black accessories and a black-and-gray topper; in 2011, Kate Walsh (center) pumped up her navy hat with a Max Mara dress and complementary pumps; and that same year, Paula Patton (right) went for the win in a Grey Goose-inspired hat by Louise Green with a simple white dress and blue shoes.

White isn’t the only color to wear — we’ve seen black, blue, floral prints and red, too — but these ladies seem to have the right idea. We can’t wait to see what kinds of fashions Saturday’s 138th Derby bring! Tell us: Are you wearing anything special for the Derby this weekend? What fashions are you most excited to see?
