'New Girl' Costumer: Everything Is 'So Darn Cute' on Zooey Deschanel

Forget quirky: Zooey Deschanel is straight up adorable. At least New Girl costumer Debra McGuire thinks so.

“Everything is so darn cute on her,” McGuire tells PEOPLE. “The hair, the face, the eyes … every time she puts something on it just sparkles.”

McGuire says the initial idea behind Deschanel’s character Jess’s wardrobe was to “do something that we hadn’t seen on TV before,” she says. “I thought the best thing for Jess was to do primary colors — there’s something about those that I thought really worked for the character. So she’s sort of a mix of Crayola crayons.”

Perfect examples are the Chromatic Gallerie shoes Jess often wears on the show. “They’re all in primary colors, so I mix and match those with her outfits,” McGuire explains. “I’ll pair a purple dress and green shoes, for example. We’re not playing it safe with color.”

Though Jess’s wardrobe isn’t the most adventurous — she’s a schoolteacher just re-entering the dating world — it is maturing a bit, McGuire says. “There’s constantly a slight evolution, though it’s very script-driven,” she explains. “I just follow the lead of the writers.”

And luckily, the costumer has a good partner in Deschanel; McGuire says the two are “pretty much on the same wavelength. I haven’t had a situation where she didn’t want to wear something, or didn’t like something. I don’t put her in anything that’s not a favorite.”

That must mean that an upcoming, slightly skimpy ensemble got a thumbs-up from both parties. “Recently I fitted her in a bathing suit, for a future episode,” McGuire reveals. “And it just doesn’t get better.” Tell us: Are you a fan of the New Girl‘s style?

I’m absolutely a fan, think she’s too cute! Sometimes wonder if her skirts are a tad short, but admire her spunk.

Cute article. But you should correct the fact that she isn’t a costumer, she’s the costume designer. That’s like saying the CEO is actually a secretary.

Not just Zooey Deschanel but the whole cast looks great on the show. Debra McGuire is actually the costume designer for New Girl, not a costumer.

I’ve been surfing online greater than three hours today, but I by no means found any attention-grabbing article like yours. It’s lovely worth sufficient for me. Personally, if all web owners and bloggers made excellent content material as you did, the web shall be a lot more helpful than ever before.

Oh, I love her so much. She’s a total role model – her style, her lifestyle, her sweet attdutie. Oh, and her hair. Also: who else gets a cover photo making such an adorable, silly face? LOVE HER.

[…] McGuire’s styling, combined with Deschanel’s great looks, have created a style that is great for eccentric, hip young women in the workplace or navigating through her late twenties and early thirties.  And the two are a match made in style heaven: McGuire says the two are “pretty much on the same wavelength. I haven’t had a situation where she didn’t want to wear something, or didn’t like something. I don’t put her in anything that’s not a favorite.” (People Style Watch) […]
