Michelle Obama State of the Union Dress: Barbara Tfank

Whether rocking a $35 frock or a myriad of designer duds, Michelle Obama‘s wardrobe choices always turn heads.

Last night’s State of the Union ensemble was no exception. As the President declared his intent to help buoy the 99 percent (“Asking a billionaire to pay at least as much as his secretary in taxes? Most Americans would call that common sense,” he declared), his wife dazzled in a cobalt sheath from Barbara Tfank’s resort collection.

While reps for the brand won’t reveal the item’s retail price, a similar style from the collection is currently available at Barneys New York for $2,400.

This isn’t the first time the First Lady has worn the Los Angeles-based designer’s sophisticated wares. Last year, she met with the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge wearing a seafoam brocade design topped with a bubblegum pink stole.

“Everything in my closet is something that I love,” Obama has said. “So that I can make choices based on what makes sense, knowing that I’m going to love whatever it is.”

Time for a change in the White House!

I don’t understand how people can spend thousands of dollars on a piece of clothing. There are SO many people and animals in dire need; HOW can we be so selfish and have our priorities so askew? (And that goes for Republicans, Democrats, Americans, Europeans, celebrities, government officials, housewives, ANYONE.)

That dress cost more than I pay in taxes.

Beautiful shade of Democratic blue!! Too expensive for me, but still beautiful.

Guess what people: If it’s your money you can spend it how ever you choose. You are not paying for her clothes. Get over being so sanctimonious.

time for @Camille to get a better job

in response to maria… we the people of the US are paying for everything she buys currently….it would be nice if obama practiced what he preached…

-marie you are right – it’s her money to spend how she chooses. However, the blatant hypocrisy of her husband, our President, telling us that the gap between the rich and the rest of us needs to be shortened and his wife wearing a dress that only the evil rich can afford, is kinda ridiculous.

Give her a break!! Celebrities spend a vulgar amount of money way in excess of the cost of this dress. We, as tax payers are not funding her wardrobe, she bought it herself. It’s a beautiful dress, and she looks lovely in it. She regularly wears dresses in the $35 price range, I even saw her wearing a dress from Target!! Excessive price, for the average citizen, absolutely, but she should not be criticized, she is the First Lady of the United States. Some people will find ANYTHING to criticize the President and his family for. I think there are far more important things to focus on. Pathetic.

It’s the old cliche’ – “do as I say not as I do”! Both of them are a couple of phoney hyprocrites! Agree with you Lyn – time for “change” in the White House!
