Michael J. Fox's 'Back to the Future' Shoes Go up for Auction

Michael J. Fox Back to the Future Shoes

Ever wonder what sneakers will look like in the very distant future — say, 2015?

Nike is here to remind us. They’ve released 1,500 pairs of Nike Air Mags, the futuristic shoes Michael J. Fox (as the beloved Marty McFly) wore in Back to the Future II as he tried to fit in in the year 2015.

Buyers can head to eBay — where bidding as of Friday afternoon was well into the thousands — until Sept. 18, when the auction ends. According to reports, a pair went for $37,500 at a live auction Thursday night, too. All proceeds will benefit the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research.

Marty himself — a.k.a. Fox — showed off a pair Thursday night on the Late Show With David Letterman.

“This brings together three populations of people with major Joneses,” Fox told Letterman as he made the shoes light up, just like in the movie. “The sneakerheads, the Back to the Future people, who, believe me, are out of their mind … in a good way! Thank God for them. And the people in the Parkinson’s community who have an interest in research.”

Nike says they’ve “been urged to release the shoes for many years,” and now that the company has done it, they didn’t mess around. According to a release, “the aesthetic is an exact match, down to the contours of the upper, the glowing LED panel and the electroluminescent NIKE in the strap.” Tell us: Would you bid on a pair of Nike Air Mags?

I would totally bid if I had that kind of money. Way to go NIKE & EBAY for doing this for a great cause & a GREAT person. I woild also want a pair autographed by “Marty” himself :)

Jill on

It would be cool for Nike to release them again in 2015…since that’s the era they’re supposed to be from. :)

I’d rather have a hoverboard.

Love this! My dad’s had Parkinson’s since he was 31 years old (ten years ago) people with Parkinson’s have to go through too much on a daily basis not being able to do the simple things we take for granted like walking, talking, swallowing, and even staying still. Thanks to all those who contributed! Thank you Nike! :)

If I had the stray cash, I would absolutely buy a pair. My problem is that I would never be able to bring myself to wear them, so I guess I will need two pairs! :-)

On a side note: God bless Mr. Fox. The man has iron cajones, and continues to appear in public where the average hollywood type would just lay down and die.

We should all be that brave.

I would bid on them if I could afford them, the proceeds are going to a VERY worthy cause, Michael J. Fox is a great person to head up this cause, I wish him a lot of luck and high amounts of bids..

No I would NOT bid on them and I’ll tell you why, normal everyday people can’t afford to buy them when they cost more tan a new car so I think NIKE is unfair about just catering to the super rich. Whoever is in charge of their marketing didn’t think of us less fortunate fans.

Remy, the idea here is to raise a lot of money for a worthy cause. Nike didn’t put high prices on the shoes; the way auctions work is that the highest bidder wins.

Big fan of Michael and no offence to him but the auctions are not open to Canadians. Being that Michael is a B.C. boy, I am surprized and a little disappointed that it’s a limited area auction. Great cause anyway and I hope it raises lots of money for the foundation!

I love to see a deserving charity like this helped out. I think that they deserve high praise for that. However, I’m sure these shoes don’t cost thousands to make, or even hundreds. Why not mass produce at an affordable price, and give us all a chance to help out this charity. I know you need some special ones for celebrities. Couldn’t they bid on limited editions signed by Michael J. Fox himself, and maybe some of the other cast members as well. I know I would love to go walking down memory lane in a pair of these shoes.

I was reading an article in one of the runners magazines about these sneakers. Apparently Nike plans on making them available to the general public sometime in the future. The retail would be around $300. The cost is being supplied by the fact that the shoes are being auctioned off for research.

Wow, judging by some of these comments, no good deed goes unpunished. No matter how much good someone tries to do, there are always people who have to find fault with it.

I think its very important to remember these are not official validated prices. The amount of non paying bidders removed from the auction the first night was more than the real (supposed) bids placed on most of the auctions. In other words this is going to be a debacle. Anyone who knows ebays system will be able to tell you that when the worst thing that happens if you bid and don’t pay in two days is to be not able to bid on the charity auctions again on that account…..oh….well then of course people won’t pay. You already said that prices dropped $1,500 on average in two days. So sadly charity does not benefit when scalpers, kids using there moms ebay name etc and people wanting to buck the system…..and I think that the auctioneers behind the scenes are going to be feeling this pain right about Monday morning at the 9am meeting.
The shame is on Nike. Every other kid in america wanted this show, every 30 year old who watched the movie, every sneaker collecter and everyone who wanted to support Michael.
Instead they changed it into the thing that haunts America today…..I have this…and you don’t…why? Because I have more money than you…..
