What do teenagers love? According to 14-year-old Lourdes Leon, it’s fresh and fruity scents, dramatic nail polish colors and of course, pretty party dresses.

The budding designer, who oversees Macy’s Material Girl line with mom Madonna, recently unveiled the latest offerings for the brand, including more denim, party dresses, outerwear, lingerie and makeup.

“I really like the vanilla body lotion,” she told PEOPLE while experimenting with some of the beauty buys. “It smells really good, fresh, like you just rubbed vanilla essence all over you … which is good!”

Another favorite? Labyrinth nail enamel. “I think it’s cool,” she said of the sheer, sparkly polish she was sporting that day. “You can wear it to school without it being overly bright, which is nice.”

But more than anything, the high schooler loves seeing her line grow. “I like when everything is done and I get to see it, and I’m like, ‘Oh, that’s cool,'” she explained. “This is a fine finished product, and it’s going in stores. I like to see what it looks like at the end.” Look for expanded Material Girl offerings to hit Macy’s stores this fall.

My parents owned a children’s clothing store when I was growing up, and I loved nothing more than going with them to the apparel mart and helping pick out clothes for the store. I even printed out business cards as a preteen that said “junior buyer.” If I had actually had the opportunity to design clothes or create my own line and have it in stores, I would’ve jumped at the chance. That is basically what Lourdes is doing but on a much grander scale. I actually think that what Lourdes is doing is much more educational and will have a much greater impact on her future than, say, Jayden and Willow Smith.

@ Tiff – Madonna does not live in Hollywood so she’s not a Hollywood parent. She lives in NYC and in England.

Lourdes is smart and beautiful like her mother!

actually, lourdes’ father carlos has said in interviews that he is the one who gives in whereas madonna is the disciplinarian.

i think its fantastic that lourdes is pursuing this. its really no different than teens participating in their chosen teen extra-curriculars except that she’s in the spotlight and its lucrative business! it’s great she has a goal to focus on and keep her busy, that’s what keeps teens out of trouble – finding their passion and working towards something.

I got my first job when I was 14. My kids worked from the time they were 15. Why does anyone have a problem with her being a designer and having her own line? No one cried when Mary Kate and Ashley were building their empire as children. What about artist who start their singing careers when they are teens? The fact is that she IS talented, regardless of who she is, she’s just lucky to have someone who can put her infront of the right people. Let the girl pursue her dreams.

To all the people who are claiming she only has these opportunities because of the fact that she is madonna’s daughter….so what? A parents job is to raise your children in the best way you can and provide them with whatever opportunitues you can to help them become a success in their life. I will do the same for my children…just on a smaller scale since I dont have what she has. But I will give them whatever I can and help them in anyway I can, as madonna is doing. Its what being a parent and loving your children is all about. She seems like a very loving mom, and her daughter is lucky to have her.

The girl is cute. The comments I’m reading mostly Madonna fans kissing Madonna’s butt. Like Lourdes is the greatest thing ever because she poses and smiles in front of her mothers beauty products business. BIG deal. My kids have real jobs – That I didn’t GET them. However, if Lourdes is anything like her mother, she’s going to be a complete mess.

There are lots of celeb kids who don’t do anything other than enjoying being a kid. If your parent has the resources to make your adolescent aspirations a reality why not? I wish my parents could’ve indulged me in my dreams as a youth. She’s fourteen she could be bagging groceries somewhere, but this young woman is building an empire instead!

Madonna was not, and is not, screwed up. She came from nothing and is now nearly a billionaire. She is the most successful female artist of all time. She’s never been addicted to drugs or been screwed up like so many other stars, even those who have only had a fraction of her success. She was a straight-A student in both high school (where she graduated early) and university. She earned a full dance scholarship to the University of Michigan. Madonna’s always been very driven and if she’s encouraging her work ethic in her kids, I think they will end up being successful in whatever field they choose.

The company approached Madonna AND Lourdes. It was Lourdes who wanted to do the fashion line, not Madonna. Madonna allowed her to do it as long as she took on the bulk of the work AND continued to do well at school. Lourdes only works on the line during after school hours or when she’s on break. She is not missing any school for this. It’s great she has this responsibility to keep her busy and out of trouble. She has time to be with her peers at school, at after school activities like ballet, or on weekends. Unlike child stars, she’s not on movie sets 24/7 or on tour for months on end missing out on a childhood or schoolwork. All the people who interviewed her and met her said she was very down-to-earth and sweet.

There’s a lot of jealousy and envy in some of the comments. People are lying if they say they would not do what they can to help their children out and give the best opportunities in life.

I wouldn’t touch her clothing line with a 12 foot stick.

to the point on

Really, this is just product endorsement. Lourdes is not actually sitting at a drawing board and designing clothing- she is lending her image and name to a “brand”. Parents control the purse strings and most 14 year old girls are not into Lourdes or Madonna. A middle aged woman who was listening to Madonna back in the 80s is the targeted customer and Macys believes that these women will fork over the money. If you want a good Macys brand, stick with Green Dog.
