Tom Cruise‘s oldest daughter is joining the family business. While Isabella “Bella” Cruise won’t be lighting up the silver screen anytime soon, she’s recently taken on the role of apprentice at stepmom Katie Holmes‘s fashion label Holmes & Yang. “Kate’s designing and [Bella] is just working her way up,” a beaming Tom Cruise told PEOPLE at the Simon Wiesenthal Center and Museum of Tolerance National Tribute Dinner in Beverly Hills Thursday, where he was joined by Holmes and son Connor. “She’s an artist, Bella, so it’s really great that she gets to work with it,” he added. “She’s loving it.” While her family gathered at the Beverly Wilshire Hotel to support Cruise, who was honored with the Humanitarian Award, 18-year-old Bella was on a flight back from New York City where she’s been learning about the burgeoning Holmes & Yang line. “This is my wife’s company, so you talk about movie sets with me, I can tell you [about] that,” Cruise joked while attempting to explain what exactly his daughter is doing with her step-mom’s brand. “You’ve got to go to all these different factories and verify and make sure you get the correct clothes,” he said. And is the father of three proud of his daughter’s new design aspirations? “I am,” he confirmed. “It’s wonderful!” —Jessica Wedemeyer

I am starting to think Katie may be pregnant again…the pic from a couple days ago shopping and now the big coat and handbag across her front. Anyway…Bella is beautiful..as her name suggests..lots of luck in her design aspirations!

Olsen twins and fashion? Not for my taste.

what ever happened to the children of celebrities going to university? bella and conner have been home schooled since day 1. they have never attended a public school and it’s about time that these two got an education. conner is busy starting to make movies (he started when he was really young) and now, when she should be going away and learning how to function on her own and get an education (in design if she wants), what is she doing…………..joining her step mom’s company and being taken care of once again by her rich parents.

Nothing against Bella. I think Bella should go to design school, learn the trade and join the business. She needs to learn some foundation/basics if she wants to be really serious.

That little girl needs a jacket!!

I’m with you MYSELF. Everytime I see pictures of the so called “fashionista” Suri, she doesn’t have a coat on but everyone else is bundled up. What a fasionista…rain boots and a dress. I don’t want Katie Holmes designing anything for me anytime soon.

I thought Katie always claimed that Suri was the genius designer?

Maybe Suri gets hot easily. My 4 year old never wears a jacket. It doesn’t get super cold here in San Diego but when i’m cold i put a jacket on him and everytime i turn around its on the floor. After fighting with him to put it on 4 or 5 times i give up and let him be.

Observant – I wouldn’t let my children walk either if we were surrounded by a bunch of strange men all about to crush us. Just try and imagine what the picture would be like if the camera was pointing back at the photographers – and then consider why Katie might be carrying her daughter.
