Prince William has honored his late mother by giving his new fiancée Kate Middleton the engagement ring that Prince Charles once gave to Princess Diana. “It’s very special to me. As Kate’s very special to me now, it was right to put the two together,” William said as the newly-engaged couple faced the cameras for the first time today. The ring is an oval sapphire surrounded by diamonds. William proposed to Kate on a safari in Kenya in October, but he first asked her father for permission to propose. Michael Middleton said that he and his wife are “absolutely delighted” and “thrilled” by the engagement announcement. The wedding, which will take place in the spring or summer of 2011, is already being heralded as the biggest wedding since Charles and Diana’s. –Nadine Shabeeb

I hope he finds the happiness that eluded his mother:)

She will NEVER be able to live up to that ring. Never.

It’s a beautiful sentiment that he gave Princess Diana’s ring to his bride-to-be. Perhaps he had mentioned it to her. I know men like it to be a surprise, but they also like to get it right. They seem like a wonderful couple and I wish them a lifetime of happiness!

What a lucky lady Kate is! She should be honored that William gave her his mothers’ ring. It truly shows the love and devotion he had for Diana and what a wonderful caring man she raised. I’m sure he could afford to have given her an outrageously priced ring, but instead went with his heart and put his beautiful mothers’ ring on Kates’ finger. Just because the marriage failed does mean a thing. Their marriage will be what they make it to be and I hope it will be one of love, respect and joy!

The ring was his mother’s, and now is a beautiful family heirloom. I believe it means more to William that it belonged to his mother, not that it represented a failed marriage. Perhaps Diana wanted William to have the ring, to be handed down through the generations? It would certainly make a beautiful memory, and cancel out any “bad karma” as some people are so foolishly spouting out!

No its wrong. Why did they not chop and change it how Kate would liked it. Even if it is the same ring. No she is going to life in Diana’s shadow. I suppose KATE DON’T HAVE A SAY.

Something old, something blue she will have to take down the aisle with her on her wedding day. one thing i do notice about the picture of William and Kate that i don’t remember seeing in the engagement picture of his parents is the absolute love and adoration in their eyes for each other. There is a connection between these two that never existed with his parents. it is wonderful to see that Wills and Kate are in love with each other and not just the tradition behind the position. Go Wills and Kate!

I don’ think Will sees the ring as a symbol of a failed marriage, but rather, as a legacy from his Mom. Don’t rain on his parade.
