With sister Serena Williams out of this year’s U.S. Open with a foot injury, all eyes– and bets!–are on Venus Williams. Known on the court as much for her killer serve as for her fierce tennis attire, the athletic superstar-turned-designer may have just launched a special line of tennis dresses under her EleVen activewear label for Gilt Groupe last week, but left the creation of one of her on-court outfits up to her fans! The style-savvy athlete, who took to the court Monday night to defeat Italy’s Roberta Vinci in a black visor and dress, chose what will be one of this year’s Open looks from sketches submitted to a contest held by Tide with Febreze Freshness Sport, with whom Williams is partnered. And the winning look, a sleek black-and-white number that features a halter neckline and bold print, created by Olivia Oram of Bloomfield Hills, Mich., couldn’t be more perfectly designed for Williams, who Tweeted, “Can’t wait to wear your outfit at the US Open.” And while many star athletes keep it simple on the court, adventurous looks are all part of Venus’s victory strategy, as she told recently told The Early Show, “They win matches.” Tell us: Is Venus’s U.S. Open look an ace?Christie LaRusso
