While all eyes were on the glamorous gowns on the red carpet outside of the Metropolitan Museum of Art on Monday night, inside the Costume Institute Gala, it was all about Lady Gaga who stole the show in sheer crystal catsuit. Skipping the red carpet so she could prepare for her mini-concert, Gaga performed four songs in front of a New York City-themed backdrop–while clad in a crystal-encrusted catsuit by Giorgio Armani (who notably designed her Grammys ensembles). The ensemble and the show had the star-studded audience tweeting away: “GaGa singing beautifully at Met Ball. (she’s not the lamp post – underneath on the piano),” joked Jimmy Fallon, while Cash Warren, there with wife Jessica Alba raved about her performance. “Jess and I are front row center. Insane! She’s amazing,” Warren Tweeted, adding, “haven’t heard a voice that wonderful in person in a long time.” Katy Perry joined in on the Gaga lovefest, Tweeting, “I love @ladygaga She’s still cool.” Meanwhile, a Michael Kors-clad Brooke Shields told PEOPLE that the performance was one of the highlights of the night, “I love whenever I can see Lady Gaga.” —Cara Lynn Shultz

Unlike Madonna, Gaga is an accomplished songwriter and has an excellent live voice, though…

Britney Spears is cutting edge? Pfsh. Next you’re gonna tell me she didn’t rip off The Beatles’ “Mr. Kite” for her cutting-edge “Womanizer” song. Oh wait, she didn’t write that song anyway (shocker).

I bet her performance was amazing! It isn’t just the costumes, it is what she does in them! She sings live 100% of the time, something Britney couldn’t do if her life depended on it.

Agree with Becky, I too wear those type of outfits everyday, especially when I’m grocery shopping.

Yeah, Britney did it first in a music video. However, I don’t remember Britney having the guts to show up in that during a glamorous night when all the other women are in Gucci and Dior. Just saying. And Gaga sang live. The verdict: Gaga wins!

VERY well put Jason! GaGa is absolutely amazing…i saw her LIVE and yes, I say live in New Orleans in December. She actually SINGS, and does it beautifully. Her costumes are how she expresses herself. It’s art. And she actually writes her music! Which is just a plus! How many people can you say in Hollywood stay the same, and never change? GaGa is true to what she started out as, unlike everyone else who just follows the trend at the time. I love Britney, I love Madonna, and I love X-tina. They are all talented, BUT GaGa is a one-woman team, a force. Hate her or love her, she is going to be around for a long time, and I am very happy about that. Now get over yourselves. I guarantee you all the haters are guilty of singing her songs in the car or in the club. Thanks.

Britney also wore a nude crystal outfit to an awards show (think MTV?) in early 2000 singing “Opps I Did It Again”
