The Scoop on Beyonce and Rihanna's Wild New Costumes

We were instantly intrigued when photos emerged of Beyoncé in Rio de Janeiro last week wearing a saucy, elaborately patterned jumper and headpiece on the set of her music video for “Put It In A Love Song,” her duet with Alicia Keys. Turns out the eye-catching garments were made by 26-year-old New Jersey-based designer Maya A. Lake of the label Boxing Kitten (which also counts Fergie, Solange, and Erykah Badu as fans), who is also responsible for the black and white halter top Rihanna wore in her recent “Rude Boy” video. Melina Matsoukas, who directed the Keys and Beyoncé video, called upon the designer for fun, sexy, bright clothes to match the shoot’s carnival theme. Keys and Beyoncé both wore Lake’s “Billie” jumper, named after legendary songstress Billie Holiday, while Keys also donned a custom made black and white dress, as well as the “Althea” skirt, which “comes longer in the collection and I shortened it because I thought it would be cuter for the video,” Lake tells PEOPLE. As for Rihanna’s graphic “Rude Boy” look, the designer confirms, “Rihanna is wearing a black and white bustier that’s completely custom.” For more information about Boxing Kitten, and to shop the current collection, visit – Jessica Herndon

Thank you for the information. It seems like you wrote this article about Beyonce and the costumes she wore in her new video. What I don’t understand is the need to write about Rihanna, when this is two different videos. I understand that Rihanna follows and imitates Beyonce. But Beyonce is the top top, the queen of this industry. Please from now on dedicate one article to her. Rihanna is not joined to her hip and is a world away from being on her level. Thank you

Beyonce has it all beauty, moves, voice, respect. She is the queen of music and the reigning queen of popular culture now. She is gorgeous and has epic talent. I agree with Lila. No need to link Rihanna’s name with Beyonce- just because we know everything Bey does, Rihanna will follow. It’s annoying. Beyonce has a clear cut image that is crafted in gold and deserves her own article, why put Rihanna up in there? Because you feel that w/o Beyonce’s name attached to her, Rihanna wouldn’t be relevant? I don’t blame you. I hope Bey is getting those royalty checks.

b looks great. she is a timeless beauty but also a natural beauty and she is a fashion icon b/c she starts new trends.

and yeah b is so big that people attach their names to her to make them look big like her. riri doesn’t have the talent, and influence beyonce has but they want u to think that that’s why ppl aways putting her name next to beyonce’s b is huge, larger than life. she was just named the biggest artist of the past decade, she in a league of her own.

nobody can touch her- not ciara, not britney not rihanna not lady gaga. she is the michael jackson of this generation

Beyonce looks FAB. how can anybody not love her? She is the perfect package of what an artist should be like.

First of all, to Lila, Kevin, Megan and all the rest of the ignorant HATERS- maybe if you did your research on Rihanna and tried to culture yourselves you would learn that her style is VERY influenced by her West Indian background… AND the “rude boy” video is DONE and RELEASED- you can see it on youtube if you are interested; According to the article above Beyonce’s video is in the process of being MADE. So it would seem to me that Rihanna led the trend discussed above. Beyonce is no doubt very talented and I’ll give her that she is a trendsetter in music. But for you to suggest that Rihanna tries to “imitates” Beyonce proves that you have not followed Rihanna long enough to have watched her evolve… They are both great talents, and very different- jut becanouse they are both beautiful, black musician trendsetters DOES NOT mean one is “imitating” the other. Beyonce has YEARS of experience that put her ahead of the game- and Rihanna has done very well for herself considering she started out singing talent comps on an island of 255 thousand ppl.
