Following a trip to Botswana and South Africa last December to learn more about improvements made in the diamond mining industry, actress, fashion designer, and InStyle contributing editor Rachel Bilson was inspired to take matters into her own hands to promote the cause. InStyle reports that the 28-year-old star has just created a bracelet to benefit the Diamond Empowerment Fund, a non-profit that supports education in Africa. The new Bilson-designed accessory strikes a nice balance between rugged and refined, comprised of earthy brown leather cords punctuated by a twisted gold charm that frames a dainty, sparkly round diamond. It retails for $100, with $20 from the sale of each piece going to the Diamond Empowerment Fund to build student housing at the CIDA City Campus, a university in Johannesburg. Why didn’t she said something about this herself instead are letting someone else doo it? She always on the internet and not on the tv. She should tell people about the work she doing for other people She always coping off are people and not doing it from her heart. She only do it for personal gain. don’t eee her doing nothing for the people in hatiti. Why you people put her here when you don’t put her with hayden.Don’t he suppose to be part are her life too?And wheen she be with other guys you just brush her off like like she don’t do nothing bad. If rachel was real about this she would have told the media about this. why keep it Quiet?

Stacey on

Lois, I have to disagree. I think had she been doing this for personal gain it would have been everywhere, like many other celebs.

where’s the other $80 going?

Do story on Hayden he’s the one who is important. If she wasn’t dating hayden she wouldn’t be here.It is good cause but she let people know hat she’s doing. Also need to find out rather are not she has broken off with him.Months ago she said that had.And she barely wear the ring he suppose to have given her

Gosh, the audacity some folks have – Rachel’s trying to do something good here for these poor kids and some are blasting her it.

The fact is one person can’t help the whole bloody world – she’s at least trying -let’s give her some credit. Besides this design was already created before the Haiti catastrophe.

To those who said she’s looking for publicity – quite the contrary – if she was she’d be like all over the news and front pages going blah blah.

If all the highly paid celebrities did some ounce of good for the poor and needy out there – then this world would be a far better place.

Majority of the celebrities live lavish lifestyles, 2000,00 bags, shoes, accessories etc -who’s thinking about the poor, hungry or the ill then?

One restaurant bill for an evening can probably feed a child in Africa or Haiti for an entire year.

Let’s be happy when others are helping our poor brothers and sisters in impoverished nations -rather than criticize -lets implore them to do better and more.

$80 on

The other $80 is probably going for parts and labor. With real leather, diamonds and gold, she probably wanted to design something that people would actually wear and that would last, and therefore they reminded of the great cause that it helped and represents everytime it is worn. I think it’s a great cause, and am glad she is doing something to help. Personally I could care less who or if she is dating, that is not the point of this piece, the point is that she is doing something to support a great cause! And personally I know who she is, and I had no idea she was dating anyone!

stacey it is for personal gain rachel don’t do nothing if it don’t put her in limelight. why didn’t want noone to know about it? All celebs put it out there why not here. She has been in the limelight for a whole week last weekm and didn;t mention it to noone. She wouldn’t have went if she wasn’t working for instyle. and you know it.She don’t work well with othern people and she hate natalie portman. Natalie is the one that really do from the heart not her. And she wasn’t involved with hayden people magazine wouldn’t put her here like always. Thhe don;t put here until her rep are tell people to do. And what about the orher charity she they don’t think twicw about her.Rachel always put herself first not noone else. Its her job that sent there. Like she suppose to have went to golden globe she didn’t show up but show up at other events and the other charity she didn saturday that peole forgot to mention. She only show up are do something for attention and not from the heart. Rachel is not the person you peole think she is. She deny that she hayden is engaged is about to break -up.She never speak about herself and never wants the limelight for herself.Yes its a good thing she’s doing but she don’t care to mention it. Only when nothing else i going won with her life. This story suppose to being ealirer than this Its just waste are ink on her. And people don’t how to get at department store near you.She don’t even help other like others celebs do.That go behony and help their kind too she don’t.It first started at home you know. When was the last time she ever went to a soup kitchen and fed someone? Other people go volunteer their time she don’t.All she do is folled around a guy and let other people do work for her.She never lift a finger to help her own kind.If she she did thatshe would a true people and she don’t

Who cares if she is doing it from her heart or just personal gain. The fact is she is doing something to help people in need, she is bringing and issue to light. Just the publicity alone is enough for others to discover the issue and help. Good for Rachel, who I think is really doing this from her heart because she seems like a great human being.

Dear Lois, maybe you should click on the instyle.com. link and read the article. Maybe it will make things a bit more clear for you. I personally think ANYTHING anyone does to help, is great. It doesn’t always have to be about personal gain. Have a lovely day.

People need to learn how to type! It’s brutal reading your posts!!!

ah… charity fueled by materialism yet again. It’s better if you’re buying the piece because you actually like it and instead of another piece that donates *none* of the proceeds, but if you’re just getting it for a tangible token of your “generosity” you’re better off just donating the $100.

Tessa on

Oh and P.S. people…. LEARN SOME GRAMMAR and PUNCTUATION. It doesn’t help you sound any smarter while making a point when one can barely understand what you are trying to say.

Faye on

Firstly I agree with Tessa, the spelling and grammar on here is dreadful. Secondly, I personally believe she is doing this for all the right reasons, I don’t believe she is doing this for attention. Why is it when someone famous does something caring and generous people always think there is a shallow underlying reason for their act of kindness? Maybe people need to stop their jealously getting in the way of appreciating a good thing someone has done.

Aisha on

Agreed with Stacey!
i guess some people these days are so ignorant…

nostalgicwardrobe on

I am really shocked at both the lack of punctuation and grammar in some of these comments–if you’re going to take the trouble to write a comment, at least make sure people can understand it…please–but also: why are people so angry that Rachel Bilson is trying to use her celebrity to bring light to a cause and organization that is only trying to help impoverished kids who really need it? Really, why not have this kind of thing presented to people who are clearly able to spend money on things they don’t really need? Maybe some of them will see this for more than just a pretty bracelet and think: hey I want to buy it to help out at least in a small way. After all don’t we want more companies to do things like this more often? I love Rachel Bilson, but I’m not going to pretend that I know who she is and what her morals are. I love her sense of style, but I don’t care who she’s dating or what designers she’s into–why does that matter?
