Lady Gaga on Her Style: "I've Always Been an Outspoken and Extreme Dresser"

Vogue‘s December issue is getting bewitched– literally– by fierce style star Lady Gaga. Starring in a Hansel and Gretel-inspired spread, shot by famed photographer Annie Leibovitz, Lady Gaga channels her naughtier side to play a witch, dressed by her pal Marc Jacobs. The pop sensation tells the magazine, “I’ve always been an outspoken and extreme dresser.” And while her ruffled bloomer shorts and insanely high heels for the Vogue spread were nothing out of the ordinary for Gaga, Vogue staffers were intrigued by what the star wore to visit their office before the shoot! Lady Gaga reportedly showed up to 4 Times Square first wearing a trailing white chiffon Galliano goddess gown with a Philip Treacy headdress that spelled VOGUE in clipped white feathers, only to turn up the next day in a little black dress and flaming-red wig. And if that wasn’t outrageous enough, the singer arrived for the actual shoot “stark naked except for her white rubber raincoat and some very, very high heels!” recounts Vogue Creative Director Grace Coddington. So where does she get her crazy fashion from? Her art director, Matthew Williams–“my Jean-Paul Goude”–was “the inspiration that made the connection for me between the art world and the fashion world,” Lady Gaga tells Vogue. “He used to say things like ‘If you want to make a shoulder pad, don’t research jackets—research sculpture, mineral rocks, paintings.’ He thinks in a different way; he is the designer of the future.” Check out the rest of Lady Gaga’s spread and hear more from the pop star at in Vogue‘s December Issue, on newsstands November 24, or at

Didn’t Madonna does this in the 80’s??

I agree so much with you, Jen! Lady Gaga is the most interesting and courageous pop artist to come along in years! She really has fun with fashion, and at the end of the day, isn’t that what it is for? There are so many ways to drape fabric on the body, (or plastic and other materials for that matter!), why limit yourself? I absolutely loved her video for Bad Romance (the video for Paparazzi was amazing as well). Work it, Gaga!

I don’t think Madonna did anything like this in the 80s. Her version of crazy style was wearing green socks with orange pumps. Gaga goes much farther than that, and incorporates a broader range of materials. Love it!

L-O-V-E her! She’s bold and fierce!

Does Gaga think no one will remember her as “Stefani” which was lackluster?
So, with short- term-memory Americans who seem to crave the Bizarre, just reinvent yourself as this PSEUDO AVANT GARDE PERSONALITY and say, “i’ve Always Been An Extreme Dresser”,
pout, look sultry and VOILA you’re in Vogue!

She has not always been an outspoken and extreme dresser. She was on an episode of some prank show on mtv back in the day and she was wearing a regular ol’ black dress with her regular ol’ black hair.

outspoken and extreme sells. that’s it.

Most of us grew up after reaching age 3 and playing dress-up. Somewhere along the way Gaga (or as I think of her Gag Gag) lost her way!

Im calling bull on that statement. If you see her on boiling points a few years ago she was a normal chick. That is fine to change but dont lie when the proof is on youtube.

She is getting attention by the way she dresses, whether you like it or not! that is the point!
