Valerie Bertinelli Reveals the Secrets Behind Her Bikini Body Fitness Routine

11/04/2009 at 11:42 AM ET

On Rachael Ray today, Valerie Bertinelli and her trainer Christopher Ross Lane reveal how the star got her amazing bikini-body at 49 years old. The best news is you can follow her routine at home — just like Valerie. “He came up with a program that was so simple. Not easy, but simple,” said the Jenny Craig spokesmodel, who just released an exercise video called Losing It and Keeping Fit. “It still takes a lot to do, but we need to tell everybody, because anybody can do this. We did it in my living room.” Lane stresses that Valerie’s workout routine was really “back to basics,” adding that he had the star doing “step ups on the coffee table.” “Your body is your own best tool!” the star trainer said. “You don’t need to have weights, you don’t need fancy equipment. You can just do a lot of squats.” Valerie even surprised herself—by learning to like running. “He said he’s going to make her a runner, and I was like ‘yeah right.’ The first twenty minutes I hate, I hate!” says Bertinelli, who lost 40 pounds on Jenny Craig. “And then once the endorphins kick in, it’s OK … and he had me running a half marathon.” See the full episode on today’s Rachael Ray.—Kristin Larson

I LOVE Valerie Bertinelli and not just for her new body but her personality is so SWEET. She is one of the TRUE Hollywood ladies that is REAL, NOT phoney like so many of them. She just comes across as a regular person that could easily just be your next door neighbour. I just wish that the REST of these celebrities could be more like her, what you see is what you get.

I love Valerie too… she’s always been a fave of mine. I might have to buy her video. I’m always looking for a new way to work out that doesn’t require the purchase of a $500 piece of equipment.

Good for Valerie! She looks great and I think it’s great that she’s trying to motivate people to get in a little exercise, even if it’s just at home!

Its always amazing to hear ‘celebrities’ say that it doesn’t take alot to train or loose wieght…as long as you can afford a personal trainer! Those of us with real day y oday jobs, family, kids etc just don’t have the time or $$ for all these wonderful diet plans. Sad, but true. Real people need real solutions, not celebrities.

I have just read her two books and joined Jenny Craig this week, partially because of her. She is a fantastic, real-life role model. I am anxious at 40 to look as great as she does at 49!

She is such an inspiration! After my histerectomy at the age of 28, I put on 36 pounds and HATED myself! I started taking control of my own actions and have dropped 32 pounds sinse May, completed my first half-marathon, and am in the best shape EVER!! At 31 I did not want to just give up…. so for those of you who are at that point… Don’t give up! Getting back into shape CAN be done!! Watch your calories and exercise! :) Good luck!!

Ps… I didn’t join a gym nor did I join a food program! I have a full time job, attend college at night, and have a full time family! Like I said, it can be done… you have to have the WANT TO.

For those who whine about celebrities being able to afford personal trainers when they can’t – the whole point is that Valerie paid the trainer and now they are showing you what she learned from that experience for free. The whole point is that you CAN do it without buying special equipment or joining a gym – so it is doable for everyone – so find another excuse why you aren’t able to do it too.

At 42 I wore a size 2-4 and weighed 104, and the only “program” I joined was Jazzercize. Everything else was on my own. I have 4 children and was a foster parent for 13 years. I also worked and was involved in outside activities, and had no help with my family other than my husband. No excuses, people, you can do it if you want to. If you don’t, no one can make you. You don’t need drugs and all you need is the desire to be healthy and eat right. Go for it!
