WATCH: Mark-Paul Gosselaar's Hair-Raising Experience -- Being Blonde Zack Morris!

06/09/2009 at 02:11 PM ET

For the record: Mark-Paul Gosselaar has always been a serious actor, even when he was playing personality challenged Zack Morris on the goofy ’90s sitcom Saved by the Bell. “The reason why it was such a success in my opinion was because we worked really hard at it,” Gosselaar, 35, now the star of the TNT legal series Raising the Bar, tells PEOPLE. “I feel things work because of the amount of effort that you put into it, you’ll see a return. That was the way it was for Saved by the Bell. We didn’t take anything for granted on that show.” And that work ethic extended to the toil required for the blond hair sported by the naturally brunette Gosselaar. “I sat every three weeks in a chair getting my hair done by someone on the set putting in foils,” he says. “I’m lucky that I came out the way I did. It really could have scarred me.” We’re happy to see that Gosselaar takes his blonde days in stride, even turning up on Jimmy Fallon’s couch last night in full Zack Morris costume — done to his perfectly highlighted hair. Tell us: Do you prefer Mark-Paul with his natural brunette hair or his teen-era blonde locks? –Michael Fleeman

He looks better as a blonde…that brunette is creepin me out. LOL

This was great. I love how he got back into that character.

I wish they would make a movie. Before they get to old. I loved Saved by the bell.

I remember growing up to this show and it was about as ‘wholesome’ as you could get. Completely nostalgic for me.

I get the feeling Mark remains a pretty grounded person and I enjoyed him on NYPD Blue. He did an excellent job.

Best of luck to you on future projects!

I can’t believe no one mentioned NYPD Blue. He was actually pretty good on that show. Man, I wish they’d do a NYPD retrospective special.

Either way…though I think the blonde makes him look younger. When he was on Jimmy Fallon he looked like he had barely aged!!

The natural look is sooooo much better.

Ahh, Zack Morris. LOVED HIM and still do. Sure was hot in NYPD Blue..

He needs to do something with his hair now. It is so dull and lifeless. He is washed out and although he is a very good actor he is forgettable because he really does not stand out physically. Just my opinion.

Do you mean “DOWN to his perfectly highlighted hair” ?
