Expert Beauty Tip: Get the Perfect Lip Stain

While interviewing makeup artist Charlie Green at the Twinkle fashion show, I was immediately drawn to the matte berry stained lips she had done on all the models. The rest of the face was fairly naked, just perfect skin and groomed brows, and the overall look was super easy but polished. I really wanted to try the look for myself so I got a few tips from Charlie on how to make lip stain last. She used a M.A.C Pro Stain on the models, but you can get a close approximation with the deep wine-y color of M.A.C Amplified Cream Lipstick in Burnin’, $14,, Laura Mercier Lip Stain in Sugar Violet, $20,, or Revlon Just Bitten Lip Stain, $11 at Charlie used her index finger to push the color into lips instead of a brush so it looks like a “residue of pigment” and not too perfect. She then dabbed it with a tissue to take off excess color, then pushed in another layer of color, followed by the tissue and then a final application. The key to this look is the matte texture so skip gloss altogether. Finish with a light dusting of translucent powder, a couple swipes of clear brow gel and curled lashes and you’re all set.

Thank you so much for that. As a make up artist we always look for the next best thing that will last and thank you for finding the perfect lip stains both cheap and pricey.

I use the Revlon Just Bitten stain in Cherry Tart. I own all the shades, but it’s without a doubt my favorite. Against my pale white skin, it looks gorgeous. I have a hard time wearing lipstick, because my lips are very full and it seems to look odd on me.. so the lip stains are what I like to use. I use a makeup wedge to blend them in. Once they’ve dried, the subtle red tint lasts all day and looks beautiful. Not overpowering or annoying like I find lipstick to be. You can layer lipgloss or a lip balm over it to keep your lips moisturized and it looks far more natural than lipstick ever could.

I have to know where I can get a dress like Natalie Portman’s red minidress!!!!!!!!!

Lip stains are fantastic! I use Vincent Longo gel stain in Liquid Kiss. I have dark brown hair, brown eyes and fair skin. I have full lips and lip stains work so much better than lipstick, for me. I also use a coordinating lip gloss over the lip stain. It looks beautiful and feels great!

Just wondering what brand/shade of lip color Rihanna is wearing in the photo (at AMA’s I believe). She is wearing a head band in the photo. THX
