Shop for a Cause: TOMS Shoes

Ever feel guilty about indulging your soft spot for shoes? Fret not. For every pair of TOMS shoes you buy, a pair will go to a child who can’t afford shoes in Argentina, Ethiopia, and South Africa. Former Amazing Race II finalist Blake Mycoskie developed the concept for TOMS upon his 2006 return to Argentina following his initial trip there on the show. Struck by the poverty-stricken children in villages who couldn’t attend school and had diseases due to their inability to afford shoes, “I had an epiphany,” Mycoskie said, “what if we took this [traditional Argentinean] shoe and redesigned it and every time we sell a pair we give one away?” TOMS Shoes has already given 50,000 children in Argentina shoes last year, and will give another 50,000 shoes to South African children in November. Starting at $38 a pair, they’re an affordable — and magnanimous — addition to your closet. And just to give them some style cred, fashionista fans include Scarlett Johannson (who has them in every color), Sienna Miller, and Karl Lagerfeld. Get your own at

Are these comfortable???? Buying these would ease my guilt knowing they are really 2 for 1, but are they comfy??

Go to walmart buy 3 pairs of kids shoes for under 10 and drop them off at local homeless shelter and you still have money to buy yourself a pair of heels from walmart and you helped 3 local children. Just a thought

I absolutely LOVE my TOMS! I first learned about them when Blake Mycoskie spoke at an event I attended, and I am now obsessed with them. I have a few pairs, but my favorite is the first pair I bought–white ones that I dyed and decorated myself as a part of the TOMS Painted White campaign. These shoes are super comfortable, and it’s such a great cause. My only suggestion to buyers is to be careful of the sizing; I had to buy a size and a half bigger than what I normally wear for my white pair, but the next pair I got in the same size is way too big. I think TOMS has finally started making the shoes based on normal sizes now, but it’s just something to consider when you buy your pair.

To Dawn:
You can buy them a whole bunch of shoes from walmart and drop them off at your homeless shelter, BUT know ing that wal mart mistreats their employees and the shoes sold there are sweatshop made what would be the point?

haha i’m from argentina. It’s actually funny, the alpargatas (that’s what they are called) were fashionable like four years ago, almost nobody wears them anymore.HATE them, never owned a pair. and why do they make us sound like we are some african country or something.. anyways if its for a good cause its a great idea.
