Sarah Jessica Parker on Other Celeb Designers and Cheap Chic

04/30/2007 at 03:56 PM ET

After seeing her as couture-clad Carrie Bradshaw for so many years, it may be hard to adjust to the idea of Sarah Jessica Parker wearing clothes that cost $20 and less — but the star’s new clothing line, Bitten, for mall mega-chain Steve & Barry’s is just that affordable. In the June issue of Glamour, SJP sounds off on a few other celeb designers, telling the magazine, “Madonna’s line for H&M is extremely directional, provocative and sexy. I don’t know J. Lo’s line as well, but I know that it’s much more trendy than Bitten. L.A.M.B. by Gwen Stefani is much more avant-garde, definitely high fashion. But I don’t want to do that for women, because that’s not really their lives.” And growing up with her sister’s hand-me-downs inspired her to do something so affordable, saying “It’s a very different philosophy of shopping. It’s the first and only time I’ve wanted to design. [Her childhood] informed my decision completely. It’s a way of giving women without financial means access to good, simple, well-made clothes to feel proud of.” And even today she is still more frugal than most. “I often return things because the spending gives me anxiety. But I’m not without my indulgences. And I don’t pretend I’m not enjoying the great fortune I’ve had.” Bitten hits stores June 7 — in the meantime, check out Glamour‘s slideshow of Sarah Jessica Parker by clicking here.

Hey in your photos today there is a picture of Kristin Cavallari in a gorgeus off the shoulder black shirt and tiny shorts at Australia’s MTV Video Music Awards in Sydney. Where can we find her shirt would love to know where she bought it or where we can buy a look-a-like!

I’m very curious about this clothing line. I adore her, but I can’t imagine anything good really coming from Steve & Barrys.

Gosh I love her!! Even with her fame and fortune, she still sounds very sweetly down to earth.

sjp comes across as very approachable and genuine. plus she is very common looking, in a good way, and i think that helps people relate to her and makes them more apt to buy stuff she endorses. i guess we’ll see if this is true by how her clothing line does.
by the way, i’ve never heard of steve & barry’s. are they all over the U.S.? what other store would they be compared to that i might know?

I love that she got out of the box and design for the real woman. Who wants to look good but can’t afford to pay a fortune in clothing. I don’t know how good is the store but thanks SJP for thinking down to earth!!!!!

I had never heard of Steve & Barry’s but I’m willing to check it out – it is after all Sarah Jessica Parker! If you click on the pick ‘Steve & Barry’s’ in the article, it takes you to their website, where you can find store locations. They also have a Bitten by SJP site on their homepage, where you can sign up for update emails about the Bitten line. When I first heard that SJP was doing a clothing line, I was worried it would be outrageously expensive like a lot of the celebrity-designed clothing ranges – yet it’s $20 and under! I can hardly wait to check out the Bitten collection!
