Does Bathing Suit Shopping Stress You Out?

04/27/2007 at 11:00 AM ET

As our office fills up with racks of itsy-bitsy bikinis and photos of celebrities, like Lindsay Lohan, looking amazing on beach vacations flood our pages, my stress level keeps rising! Sure, if I looked like Lindsay in a bikini (all nine of them) I’d be more than happy to hit the stores. But in my current state of, uh, not quite summer-ready, the thought of trying on string bikinis in fluorescent lighting with unflattering mirrors makes me want to run and hide. For now, I am investigating more cute coverups like Cameron’s, until the gym becomes more of a daily reality. — Melissa Liebling-Goldberg

I try not to get too stressed out about bathing suit shopping. You need to accept the person you are. The fact is not all of us can be 18-25 again and in great shape. I love who I am, and if I have a little extra, so be it, more to love : )

in a recent issue of glamour, they did a bit where they confronted people OF ALL SIZES on the beach that were wearing unflattering suits, and gave them new suits that worked best for their particular shape. it was genius! and i think that’s the point! you don’t have to be a thin, hard-bodied 20-something to look good and accentuate the best parts of whatever you are working with. let’s face it, all of us have flaws, and i was inspired by the girls in that article who probably weren’t completely satisfied with their bodies, but were getting out there and enjoying the sun and sand anyway! i for one know that if i waited to look perfect to go enjoy myself at the beach, i would never make it! so ladies, cut yourself a little slack, realize that we come in all different shapes and sizes, and get out there and have fun! remember that attitude is half the battle, and that smiling and having a good time cover a multitude of sins!

I agree with Faith. Great comments!

Also, ladies – I recommend swimsuit shopping on Monday nights after 7 PM. The malls are empty at that time, leaving you plenty of room to walk through the racks, try things on and not be rushed. Good luck!

I think that during this time of year everyone becomes more conscious of what and how much they eat.
But when I’m at the beach I’m not very concerned about how I look I’m their to relax, and get a tan.

I’d just like to give a sincer “thank you” to faith.

There should be more people that think like you! I love summertime – and am far from perfect, but I like to have fun in the sun and enjoy myself. I hate it when girls are always so self critical, or critical of others. Other than that, faith said it all. Happy summer to all! :p

I agree with everyone, it shouldn’t matter how you look at the beach. In fact, the beach is the one place you should feel comfortable. It shouldn’t be such a big deal, I know when I’m at the beach, I’m not paying attention to what anyone else is wearing, I just wanna have fun.

Yeah it makes me stressed out, mostly because I practically have no boobs, lol!

Awesome Faith, I couldn’t have said it better.

I don’t really get stressed out over finding the perfect bikini for my body type. While I am thin, I am curvy in some places like my hips/butt, my mom blessed me with her booty {I’m half Puerto Rican} and I’m blessed with a fullness up top. I’m confident with my body and I’m at the beach to have fun. Some women are insecure with their bodies, but we just have to learn that not all of our body types are gonna be the same, we’re not all “perfect” in Hollywood standards. We should just accept the beauty inside and out and not be overly critical. Be proud and embrace yourself.
