Muffin Tops And Corsets: Tyra Banks' Style Tips

01/31/2007 at 05:00 PM ET

After 17 years in the fashion business and dealing with her 30 pound weight gain, this week’s PEOPLE cover subject Tyra Banks has figured out a few key ways to stay looking good. Here are Tyra’s top tips:

1. Give up Super Low-Rise Jeans. “This whole low jeans thing is not a good look,” Banks says. “Even the smaller girls are going to have a muffin top. I recommend a higher jean and darker colors.”

2. Spanx Your Booty. “I’ve got dimples in my booty. There’s nothing wrong with Spanx or control tops. And if you can handle it, there’s nothing better than a corset. Find someone who can lace it up for you, it pushes everything down and up.”

3. A Cinch in a Snatch. “That’s what my stylist Yaniece and I call being locked into the cinched belt. My breasts are getting bigger so if I get loose clothing, it looks too unshapely. You ask ‘Where’s the body?’ Even when it’s out of fashion, wear it!”

4. Let Your Personality Shine, Not Your Clothes. “Women, don’t wear anything shiny or satiny. Those kinds of materials catch the light and makes [you] look bigger.”

Ms. Banks
Thank you for speaking. We need to change the value that our society has placed on the the idea of an ideal woman or ideal woman’s weight. You have made a worthy contribution by presenting a positive role model who accepts the way a woman’s body changes. Our different shapes, sizes and make-ups should be celebrated and embraced. While we can all strive to be as healthy as possible, it is important that we learn to relax about our appearances and realize that it can still be fun to PLAY dress up. I applaud women like you, Mo’Nique, Queen Latifah, Beyonce, Tocara, Jennifer Hudson, and Mia Tyler. You are all strong women who have displayed confidence, strength and beauty when your weight or any other physical attribute has been brought to judgement because of your professions. It is because of your celebrity that we depend and appreciate your voice and example. Thank You Again.

Dear Tyra:

The issue is not that “you still look beautiful”. The issue is that you have improved your already gorgeous insignia. You are glowing – healthy- like more regal than ever! You look younger and even in love.. (seriously!)

I personally used to find you a bit too thin. And you know, thin women tend to have a grumpy look on their faces
(probably un-beknownst to them).

You now look like a classic image of a goddess, like Lena Horne – like Ava Gardner…womanly!.. I am certain that more, many more men are salivating – I am- and i am one straight woman- let me tell ya.. The fashion world is run by misogynist gay men who want women to look like boys and miserable thin femaile editor in chifs who have control issues– to starve oneself is built in self-hatred and can never celbrate the sensuality of life that g-d has granted us… to see a boisterous healthy gal like you shows the reat of western culture that she lives, eats and breathes well in the moment. I am very proud of you. I support sensuous nutrition that can convince you that it ain’t diet food- no way! (I am a chef and writer)

i agree, anorexia is not the way to go!we should love our body types, and take good care of ourselves!no matter our pants size… we can still work it out so we can look divine! theres nothing wrong wit being a size 11…thats wat i say…..that just means we are full-figured…not fat! Tyra is setting a good example for the next generations…i just hope other famous people can do the same thing too!

There are no words toe xpress my appreciaiton to Tyra for her honesty about her weight. I wish more super stars would allow themselves to just be who they are, to be real. MS Banks has actually given me hope for the future of all women not just women in the industry, because we are all caught up in the weight issue. Thank you Tyra Banks for being courageous enough to be yourself.

Tyra looks great! Who else can gain thirty pounds and look that great! I only wish she’d go back to the darker hair. It looked more natural and it flattered her better. Regardless, she is lovely.

Tyra is is smart, strong successful woman and beautiful on the inside as well as the outside. I applaud he stand on the weight issue and wish more people would see things like she does. She is just as gorgeous now as she was 30 pounds ago. Beauty is not a size.
